best gear selector cable length
need some advice what gear selectors people are using in there mk1. ive currently have a carrodo g60 selector and its horrible plus the cable length are way to long. ive got my self a 02j tower with audi tt short shift onto a 02a box, but now looking for a better selector with the right cable length. ive been looking at the polo selectors but dont know if cables will be to short. mk4 cables are longer than the carrodo ones. any info please thanks

I'm still massively undecided on how to run mine.
I've got full 02a setup with corrado cables and shifter, I'm swaying toward just mounting it in the car and running cables thought the firewall. I had a mk2 VR that was using full 02a and I liked it.
I've also got 02j shifter but no tower yet, as a backup option. Alot of peeps suggest this setup with lupo cables.

Where abouts do your cables go through the firewall just out of interest?

Strange, i've heard of lots of people doing this without a hitch.
Food for thought…. I'm leaving all this to the last possible point as still undecided.

ok so i went to my local breakers yard and found a polo 1.4 16v on a 54 plate removed the gear selector. trial fitted on my car and the cables are pefect length when running via firewall. no kinks or bends they are shorter than the mk4 golf cables. also grabbed a mk4 02j gearbox bracket while i was there . just got to buy audi tt short shift and the relay as a bonus they come with the later style ends

mk4 cables are long .about the same lenght as the carrodo 02a shifter. i tryed to run them via the firewall and they were way to long. i didnt want to run cables underneath as im going big exhaust. hence why i used the polo shifter and cables nice perfect fit when going via firewll. if you got the mk4 shifter run it under the car as they be fine. i get some pitcures up when i get my car back from body shop

I found corrado one's worked perfectly on mine through the bulkhead but i made myself a tower for the shifter mech so that might account for me needing the extra lenght .

i know this an old thread, but i am trying to decide way forward at mo.
i have std 83 mk1 gti 020 box with cable clutch and rod shift.
going abf in new year. i have the 02a dpa abf box, but it has hydraulic clutch and cable shift as it came with the engine.
does the cable gear selector fit under the tunnel? polo or mk3. i'd like to keep the interior looking std. what cables should i use? polo or mk3/4. i've heard the mk4 cable shifter is better than mk3, but got no evidence..
any advice from those in the know would be awesome.
thanks

Thanks peterg60
What cars are the 02j boxes on? I'll have to pop to the breakers.
I'll look for the mk4 cable shifter.
How does the 02a with 02j tower and cable shift feel compared to a rod shift mechanism?
Thanks
