It's not illegal to remove them. You don't have to tell anyone although if you were to carry passengers then I imagine the insurance company would have an issue with it. I've taken mine out, mainly because they were getting in the way of carrying things and fixing other things.

Deffo not illegal.

As for MOT - If there are no seats - you don't need seat belts!
From the horses (My MOT man) mouth so to speak!

Here is my (Legal and MOT'd) stripped out rear…

Stripped out here too! went through the MOT fine.. and as AL said, no seats means no seatbelts required

One day I'll get the wood in carpet and hopefully look as clean as yours AL….one day

hey thanks for the quick replys as always.
on the dvla forms it says 5 seat car, i imagine this would stay the same, just that they r not in. also that if i was to crash (obviously hope not) but if then would the insurance company try to use this as a way of wriggling out?

my car is far too rusty, i have such a bad leak in footwells that i have no carpet now, every time it rains get an inch of water in there. also leaking through rear lights now too! and overall the whole car is rusty inside and out :( i can see rust coming through the inner arch bits at the rear by the suspension strut.

I am either spraying it all after sanding it down, or mdf then black carpet like the orange golf has, with the orange rims.

well ill probably let u know how it goes.

Thanks.

The insurance company could wriggle out of a claim (the comprehensive/fire & theft part) because its a modification. So you'd need to declare it to them. I've no idea how it would affect your premium, though.

for the MOT your fine its just your insurance company, I'd tell them as worst case and you crash you bet they'd try and get away without paying up saying your car is modded, A note about seat belts, as far as I know pre '83 cars dont need to have any in the back, mine don't and it passes every time on that section, but I would never carry passengers in the back anyway - the rear seats are just for looking at

By the sounds of it - it's going to fail on rust anyway!!!

Good luck…  :D
