auto gearbox to manual conversion problems

Hi to one and all this is my first post and not a simple one, and I was wondering if anybody could offer me some help !!!

I have a 90 golf cab 1.8 carb auto and I in my ultimate wisdom decided to do a gearbox conversion to manual.
got all the parts or so I thought.

changed gearbox, clutch, mounts, selecter and reverse wiring, speedo cable etc… all went well until I got to the carb throtte cable and the fat pin that holds the clutch pedal onto the steering column.

As far as I can tell these are the only two things holding me up

does anybody have any suggestions as to what throttle cable to use and connection to throttle lever to fit the old auto box connection !!!
I would fit a weber and have done with it but money is at a premium for me now

and finally the clutch pedal pin or axle as it is listed in the spares department but is not available as a part anybody found that a smeg fridge handle fits or something !!!!!

any help would be very much appreciated as the car has now been off the road for 2 months thanks to my fantasic idea

p.s if any body needs any cab parts I have just broken one to do this conversion so I might have that small bit you've always wanted

many thanks Gordon

last auto to manuel we did we changed the carb as the throttle link was different, pedals are used fiddley in a confined space.

Slight off-topic but does anyone know if converting a MKII auto is same as doing it to a MK1 :dontknow:

Most of the really decent MKIIs left seem to be autos, they are also usually low milage, one elderly owner, FSH and the iceing on the cake is that they are often GL spec with PAS :D . And being autos often make little money. Seems a cheapish way to end up with a very nice MK11.

Also what seats are in the Cabby you are breaking????

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Auto 2 Manual

I have got a 1.5auto and plan on a 1.9 diesel manual installation.My mate
is scraping a GTI rocco so I can have anything I want off it.Don't forget
the steering rack for the gear linkage bracket. My old engine and autobox
is out but that is as far as I have got at the moment.
Is the hole in the tunnel the same for the gear lever,or do I need to cut out the mounting point out of the donner car?.
Best of luck with your conversion and keep us all posted

                            Cheers Baller :D

No bearing needed at end of shaft it's as simple as removing the flywheel for the auto and putting the manual flywheel on…. but remember to use all the correct bolts nuts etc.. because some of them are special in that they wont fit the alternative flywheel due to head size.

steering rack was easy all you need is the gearstick level+ball assembly, the steering racks are the same auto and manual all the holes and mounting bracket are already there.

the mk2 i believe would be an almost identical conversion well at least in terms of engine, gearbox, linkage and mounts etc.. the only real sure way to do a conversion is to have a couple of hundred quid breaker with the manual box beside your motor and then change stuff in stages it makes it easyier especially for half knowledgeable people like myself !!!

as for the seats if you drop me a mail at

crabbgordon@hotmail.com

i'll take some pictures at the weekend and send them to you, the drivers seat is the only wear point with usual corner stuffing etc….

sorry baller I forgot to mention that the gear stick and linkage need no modification straight swap no cutting !!! everything I have done so far is just bolt on.

It's worth noting as well that there is a 80% chance that the drive shaft will need changing as well, this depends on what manual box you have and the flange size

bloody hell it actually sounds like I know what I'm talking about !!!
