Audi 80 throttle body?

HI I have heard that by changing your throttle body to that from an audi 80 increases performance. I have an 1983 1.8 8v. does anyone know if this is true? If so is there anything else i need?
Many thanks luke

It improves throttle response, instead of two smallish butterflies, you get one large and one small butterfly. You need the TB and thats it, direct replacement/fitment.

As I understand things, you need to file/grind away part of the inlet manifold to allow it to open and close fully. Also, if it were done on its own, I don;t think you'd see a net bhp rise. In conjunction with a port/polished head, big valves, 4 branch exhaust manifold and performance exhaust system, and a performance camshaft, then you'd see reasonable gains.

The butterflies will foul on the inlet manifold if you just bolt it on. It'll fit but you won't get full throttle. You need to open up the mounting face / inlet area of the manifold with a dremel

What about the other suggestions I made? I'm thinking of a little bit of a subtle upgrade to the old Storm….

I thought the audi one also had a vac pipe to the WUR that upped fuel under full load :dontknow:

soooo… to get the full effect you need to open up the inlet fanimold (without letting too much grit, waste ali grindings fall into engine), fit a audi WUR and vac pipery. Not quite as simple as simply bolting on a TB.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Top original item bottom Audi item

Linkage differences

Welded mK1 throttle cable item

Audi item fitted after porting the original item to fit

Finished item blasted and painted ready to fit

More air in the engine = better running and possibly more power . 8v when fitted with this was certainly a lot more responsive . If it was of no power gain why did Audi fit a larger item ?

Sorry Paul - just spotted your reply and I think we posted at the same time. Absolutely - the throttle body will suck more air in but without the extra fuel I'd say there's not much point.
As for modding the inlet manifold, make a paper gasket that fits the throttle body mounting face then place that on the manifold. Dust with a paint aerosol and that'll tell you what metal needs to be removed. Alternatively bolt the TB to the mani, partially open the butterflies (can't open fully - it'll foul !), and scribe marks on the manifold mounting face.
For reference here's an Audi TB loosly mounted on the Gti manifold. Note the mounting face of the manifold visable through the TB :

And here's an opened up Mk1 manifold so as to accept the Audi TB :

Hello, everyone. I don't know how old this thread is etc. But i spotted an Audi 80 at my local scrap yesterday and thought that the TB and manifold seemed to be very similar. So i searched and came across this thread, very helpful indeed. My only question is: Would the whole inlet work with the 8v? So TB and manifold i guess? I didn't have a great look to see what was what, but looked very similar.

Many thanks, Liam
