Anyone TDI'd a mk1..?

I seen that purple one a few months back in PVW just wondering if anyone actually owns one as I'm currently looking about to which conversion to go for and I'm steering towards a 150 pd tdi.

I'm currently awaiting a couple of quotes, apparently it's no more expensive than the 20vt but we'll soon see, if it's not too expensive, then I may be sending it away to be done.. watch this space..

Bert's is a TD, not TDI. In other words not electronic injection. No doubt he'll be along soon, will probably post a pic of the engine bay or something.

both mine and bert have the early mk3 aaz idi td engine  which is a simple 1.9 td good for 250 bhp with the right knobs twisted!

the late tdi engines run with an ecu and electronic fly by wire throttle, hydrolic clutch and a cable change box. i did look into it and for what i wanted the extra hastle seemed unessery. i plan to heavily tune mine when the times right for 150-200 bhp which should be easy to achive without putting out to much smoke!

a tdi is possible if you have enough knowledge of how they work. or plan to build a m-tdi pump a good place to read up on it all is www.vwdiesel.net theres a tdi and idi section for you to explore

Cheers rov716y very helpful.

I'm doing for more reliablity than anything, and it's my daily, hence the diesel engine, I've debated buying another car with the money I'd spend, but I just can't see myself in anything else.

Having had the engine out of my Tdi Caddy van, I'd say it wouldn't be mega-hard to transplant it into another car (in terms of the wireing at least). The PD engines have more electronics - the non-PD (ie, 90 / 110 bhp models) are a lot simpler and very tuneable. Mine has cable change gearbox and hydraulic clutch (same as a Mk3 Golf) so no fly by wire or anything like that. In terms of 'tunability', with turbo from a PD150, bigger injector nozzles, and a remap I was estimated approx 200bhp. I won't be going that wild though !
I'd say buying a damaged car as a donor would be the best way. Tdi Ibiza / Cordoba / Leon or Caddy van probably the cheapest option.

That was the orginal plan, I don't have the knowledge to do it myself, so I'd be paying a specialist, so I was gonna go dash conversion too.

But there's a company called megasqwirt that do the wiring looms, and I believe the ecu map, to make sure you don't need to key to start the car ect.

mine came out of a mk3 golf estate on a lreg mot failure (rotton) got of ebay for ?150 with a fully serviced td in her. never regreted it.  a td you can have in and out in a day a tdi with wireing is a bit longer.  if you want a car wqith a bit of poke and still reliability and fuel econam the aaz is the way foward simply by modifying a pin on the pump you get a good power increase and still get 55mpg out of  her.

old skool rotary ones can be run on cooking oil / deisel mix, where as PD cant, but the PDs will give better economy and more power.

when the time comes in a couple of years and i can afford the insurance on the mk1 with a new engine im seriously thinking of a 150pd power, as so long as you have a front loom it shoudlnt be "too" bad… it needs more leccys than a rotory but should be do able. then with a plug in chip i should have a good 180plus bhp and shed load of torque plus a 6 speeder for crusing when needed.

Daily - 05 plate B6 A4 Avant S Line, with 19s for the summer.. wifes car - Rare Seat Exeo ST Sport 170 Tech
Weekend - MK2 20vt monster - Plus a mk1 caddy I am fixing for my bro

Tuned Tdi's seem to be even worse on the 'sooty' front :

(caused by bigger injector nozzles methinks)
