Anyone had expierience with arch mods?

Help! I'm still pretty new to all this Mk1 golf business so I'm after a bit of advice please.

I bought a Mk1 Cab GTI, and have some ATS cup alloys(luv em) fitted with 195/50/15's and the car has been lowered and I'm getting alot of Rub(ooo er) . I dont think that changing to 195/45/15's will make enough difference as when I load up with people it will soom take up 5mm. So I'm looking at getting the inner lip rolled but what happens to the bodykit/arch. If the inner lip gets rolled then there would be nothing for the arch to screw onto.   It looks like the better thing would be to grind the lip down and then modify the arch, but if I grind the lip I run the risk of burning the paint.   :banghead:  :dontknow:

I hope I have made myself clear, I look forward to hearing anybodys thoughts or expieriences.

Thanks in advance

ok what ever you do do not grind that arch!!!

i'll tell you waht i did and you can see what you think,

remove the plastic arch, and inner arch, using a hammer and dolly, or in my case a hamer and peice of timbe wrapped in a rag, slowly work your way arround the inner of tha arch, tapping the lip up, making sure you only hit the lip where the dolly is placed on the outside of the arch, when you are happy that the lip has folded enough, take the car for a test drive, full of friends if nesecary, and refit kit, you ay need to stik it back on, silicone should do the job, oh btw i let the tyres grind the kit, as they only remove what needs to be removed ;)

I have bought some uprated shocks (bilstein dampers) but the problem is that the car is that low that I can get my finger between the tyre and arch, so as you can imagine when there is more than just me in the car it's vitually undriveable.

I have seen companys that offer to roll arches for ?40 a corner but like I said in my previous post I was not sure how to re attach the arch. I could stick it like the previous chap suggested but, if I want to remove it again ie as I plan to cause I'm going to have the paintwork sprayed over, its going to cause a bit of a problem !  :dontknow:

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated

Firstly, uprated shocks won't be enough.  At the very least get matching springs, but i'd say you'll be wanting coilies if your running really low.  If you want superhard then go for either budget en dsupersports, or or higher up range and get adjustable damping so you can set it to suit.

To be totally honest if want to run it that low (not a critism, they look 8) ) you've got bugger all option apart from lose the lip and stick on the trim pieces.  If you actualy want to be able to give it some beans get rid of the lip, either but tapping it back as Axl said or grind it back (obv painting any bare metal).

You can get foam double sided trim tape to stick teh arches on, or proper trim  sealant stuff like Silkaflex.  You will be able to remove them you'll just have to clean the arches up before it can be sprayed on.

Its either that or have to crawl everywhere…and we all know thats no fun    8)

I would roll the inner arch and bond the plastic arch's back onto the car with tiger seal.

No harm in trying AxlFoley's idea first tho…… try rolling with 17's had to do sum serious arch work.

Thanks guys, for all your info I think that I shall go with the folding of the arches and sticking the kit back on. and letting the tyres wear down the excess trim.

As always I am in all of your debt's, Thanks  :D
