AFT into Rocco Mk1

Hello

So i have a VW Scirocco mk1 1.100cc 4speed gearbox.

And i wanted to know if its possible to swap Golf III 1.600 cross flow AFT engine to my Scirocco.

Has anyone made this conversion???

I wanted it with bike carbs or 2 twin 45 webbers.

Engine and gearbox mounts???

Cheers

if its small block based then it'll drop in, if you want 5 speed then its same process as for any small block mk1 5 speed swap, make your own bracket

I donīt know if it is a small black.

It's the engine from a Golf 3/Seat 1.6cc 8V crossflow, code AFT or AEK.

Perfect to fit 2 twin webber's or bike carbs.

And before i start searching for one, i would like to know if it will plug and play on the rocco stock engine mount's or have to be modified.

pretty sure it is if its a crossflow, if you look at the block you should be able to tell easily.

however i just had a thought you might have to do a bit of custom work for the side mount due to the alternator positioning? iirc you need to do this when mounting later blocks into a polo, i assume it could be similar for mk1 as the mountings are similar? you may be able to use the mk1 alternator on the 1.6 block, if so that might solve the issue

Ok.

Here in Portugal it's easy to buy this engine a very competitive prices.

And i want to do a clean swap, without major modifications.

As for the alternator, yah will have to figure out a way to adapt it, because as you said the side mount is very nearer.

Many thanks.

Hi Joti

The AFT is a big block 8v with a crossflow head. so you would need to convert your scirocco to big block. there is plenty of info on this site for small to big conversions.

The mount on the car would need flipping to the big block postion and then you could use a Gti mount on the AFT block. Gearbox mount wise it depends on what gearbox you plan to run?

I would be interested in buying your gear stick if you did the swap as it would no longer be needed ;) 8)

The Mk1 Golfs older and better looking sibling……..

Many thanks for all the help.

I may be interested in some items that you have for sale:

front and rear bumpers as the 5 speed gearbox mount.

Next week i will be able to talk more seriously with you about that, if you are able to send those items to Portugal.

That is it!!

Now another questions, sorry all these questions, but i'm full of ideias.

Will the AFT engine work in my car with 1.1000 ignition parts, or with ignition parts from a bigger vw carb'd engine??
In resume AFT block without ECU.

As for fuel a mechanic friend told me to use a Facet one with fuel pressure regulator, that would do the job.

And if this is a bad ideia, the second option was:

1.8 8V carb EX engine from mk1 cabriolet or Golf 2.

Will ABA crossflow head fit in this engine???

Again sorry do many questions.

I need a litle help to decide what to do with to do, to start looking for parts.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

if the dizzy is the same fitment as 1.8 then you can fit a mk1/2 electronic ignition dizzy from a 1.8 k-jet gti, this will give you vacuum/mechanical advance. then fit electronic ignition coil + tci plus cap, arm and leads.  finally you need the tci-h -> coil loom from an electronic ignition car and modify your loom so it has a proper ignition live wire to power the coil rather thn the old resistor wire.

i recommend converting to electrionic ignition, its much more reliable than the older points stuff.

once all that is sorted you need to get fuel into it, some kind of custom manifold plus a pair of webers, or try to mod the inlet to take k-jet injectors which might not be too difficult depending on what injector inserts it uses.
