ADY Mk3 engine 2.0 8v into a Mk1

Post

Hi all.
My lad is starting to think about the engine in his next Mk1 and is too and frowing with what engine etc. He wants to go minimalist in the engine bay so he was thinking something on a carb rather than injection.
He has been offered a ADY 2.0 8V from a Mk3 golf gti and was wondering if it would be a straight forward job to put it in. I thought it may be easier to drop the injection and get a carb on it. He is not bothered about keeping standard fuel tank , lines or anything so is prepared to go down facet fuel pumps etc etc whatever to get it working as this is a full rebuild from shell up .
What you guys suggest , chip in with any ideas etc.

Any help would be appreciated

if you want to run it on carby, you'll have to swap the head for mk1/2 golf, as the inlet ports on mk3 head are wrong for a mk1/2 carb inlet.

other issue is there is no hole for the fuel pump, so you'll need to wire in an electric one, if the car is a gti already then sorted, the stock fuel pump wiring and relay will do the job fine just change pump/accumulator/lines for suitable carby jobbers.

weber would make your life simple, no real work involved on the wiring side you can dump most of the old wiring but keep a power feed for the carb heater (wur power will do fine!)

personally though, i would keep it injection it'll be much better. if you can go full mk3 managment as it has diagnostics etc, easier to fault find and get parts for than k-jet.  but a kr/abf would be the same effort so maybe you would want to think hard about getting one of those instead ;)

I like the 2ltr 8v in a mk1, you don't turn into a boy racer because its not really a revvy engine (like the 16v,s)but you can still make very good progress, and definitely injection, wouldn't use a carb these days.
