tbh theres no point in trying to mod a 1.1, what about an engine swap for a 1.3 or bigger, there is a 1.3 on ebay just now, 58K miles on it and about a hour to go i think.

There's plenty of big block (1.5, 1.6) and even more GTI (1.6, 1.8 injection) cars around, don't build a car you can buy. Was there a special reason you went for a 1.1 originally, for example insurance reasons?

You'll get desparately hammered by the insurance company if you 'modify' the car by fitting a bigger engine. However some (not all) insurers may look at an engine swap from 1.1 to 1.3 as simply it now being a Golf 1.3 and quote/insure you as such. Best advice would be to survive a year or so with the 1.1, then depending on funds, move up to a 1.6 carb or a proper GTI once you're 19.

i was in the same boat as yo not too long ago the best thing to do is lower it bigger brakes and so forth so you can learn how to drive proply like keeping momentum and so forth i found i could keep up with my m8s in there 106 easily on b roads but they did leave me a bit on the straights but if you wanna do a conversion then can i suggest a polo gt or g40 conversion great fun but not cheap for a g40 just bought my setup u for just shy of ?900 but gt engines are alot cheaper about ?400 max but then you need to replace the tank for injection and wire the ecu in not too bad job really and if not then a 1.3 golf engine running on bike carbs is another option hope it helps.

ps insurance aint too bad for a g40 conversion i got quoted ?800 for the year with no no claims.
