ABF into a 1.3 Driver? HELP?!

Hi there, i've had my driver for almost a year as a daily runner, but i'm now wanting to give her a little more juice and promote her to my weekend car.

My friend is selling an ABF engine, i just wondered if there is anyone who has done this conversion in the past who could give me any advice on this conversion.

I am aware that i need an extra engine mount and to move another, but what about the fuel delivery etc…?

I am not a mechanic, but luckily a good friend of mine is i just want to give him a heads up of some of the problems that may arise!

Thanks Chaps!

Doing this conversion myself at the moment only I'm starting with a gti. First thing I would do with yours is get engine, fuse box to engine loom, ecu and expansion tank etc. Then on your small block model, take off the top mount, turn it upside down and move it forward. I belive there is a mark or somthing where the mount is to be placed but check with the stickys on here first.
Also you will be easyier off with a mk1 Golf fuse box, the bladed type, your car may alredy have this and I have explored all the wireing options and this is the easyist.
Gearbox will have to be Gti 1.6 1.8 1.816v any of these will do. They are the 020 gearboxes and bolt straight onto Abf block. You will have to use the the 020 clutch with the 020 box.
Once you get there you will have caught up with. Oh yes, do,nt start ripping out your existing loom as I have done. Wireing can be tackeled later.
That will keep you busy for a while. Good luck

Thanks for that, should be enough to get me started :) What about the fuel delivery, i believe the engine i've bought comes with the k-jet setup anyway so would probably be best to go with that! I've spent hours on the forums sussing it out,i think one of the biggest expenses is getting the exhaust manifold :(. Will i have to change my radiator to mk3 GTI one just to be on the safe side? Got a bit of a bargain on the engine i reckon £200 with 60k covered including all looms clocks ecu :)

The mk3 radiator is to big so I'm useing my mk1 gti rad. This seems to be the way others have went, easyist. Don't know if your rad is big enough you will have to check. Yes keep your k jet and you'll have to get a fuel pump as yours had carbs. I'm at the stage of fuel delivery and ecu wording so I can help once your there. Get box, pump clutch, belts, check your rad, driveshafts, fusebox are all compatible first.flywheel is another thing you wil have to check. Sorry for going on but better to check now and see if you have the parts than buying double.

For the fuel delivery I had to do the same.
I've fitted an abf in mine straight from a mk3 and my mk1 was carb
Main things for fuel delivery
Polo gt or g40 lift pump which goes inside the tank. This will have a 3 pin connection whereas the old should have 2. So you need to add a permanent live
Undercar fuel pump. Same as what is found on gtis. This will need a live and earth. Use same live for this as in tank pump.
Then you will need just the hoses and also an undercar fuel reservoir. Small square thing with 4 outlets.
1 from lift pump. 1 return to lift pump. 1 to main fuel pump. 1 return from engine

For your engine mounts there will be thread on mk1 golfs and projects pages on this forum

As I understand its advised you use a clutch from mk2 golf as they cope better with more power such as the 16v clutch. Also the flywheel as well.

Check on the mk1 golfs and projects page.

Give me a shout as although I'm not an expect I will be able to give guidance or direction as I've just changed from a carbed 1.6 to abf

actually mine is digifant fuel system as its controlled by an ECU :P DOH! does that still require the two pumps and reservoir?

Iirc but I think you still do. I think your fuel system runs at higher pressure than abf and so you have to use the accumulator as well to maintain 5 bar pressure.

fueling wise there are 2 choices:
1. fit tintop gti fuel tank with L pipe to main pump, plus some kind of inline pump to suit engine
2. keep old tank but fit g40 shape polo (any), or post-84 mk1 cab or scirocco lifter pump unit and under car fuel reservoir, then your inline pump

inline pump if running k-jet must be mk1/cab/rocco k-jet injection unit, plus you need the accumulator.

if running abf management then mk1 k-jet pump still works fine but you dont need the accumulator. you can also use polo gt or g40 inline pump

yup that would be perfect.

if you're going EFI then take the accumulator off there and buy an m12x1.5 barbed adaptor for the pump then you can use push fit rubber fuel hoses on it :)
