4wd conversion

I have a Mark1 Cabriolet which is currently stripped down to nothing and sitting on my rotisserie. I was going to just to a complete nut & bolt restoration but I feel I would like to build something a bit special. I would be grateful if somebody who has done this 4wd conversion could give me some advice on what parts are needed and what the procedure would be? Cheers. :?  :?

There was an orange golf with a 4wd system fitted on the front cover of Retro car mag. Not sure what issue or even if you can get back issues, but it is a lead for you.

personally i would fit the mk2 subframe, allows for power steering, fit  passat tunnel or syncro, so you can some height for prop and exhaust, don`t chop the rear subframe it doesn`t need it, fabricate your own mounts from the mk1 original subframe mounts to the rear beam, then everything will be square

i realy realy realy realy realy want to do this conversion but it looks way ot hard for my licking maybe if i had a bit more fabrication skills, maybe one day. :lol:   well we can all dream
now off to look for amk 2 syncro :wink:

take a look at this, it looks to me like you dnt need to weld a tunnel in, and its on original mk1 gear box mounts, looks easy realy just the hangers for the prop and the indipendant suspenion on the back

thats the rear subframe off a rallye, ben cut it to fit inside the mk1 shell, but it doesn`t need to be cut , you can also see the exhaust runs under the car and not in the tunnel, the only reason y i said use the mk2 front frame is because , its stiffens the front of a mk1 with plenty of torque from the 20v it`ll soon twist the shell with loads of 4wd lauches
