2l bottom end?

mainly for people who have first hand experience with this conversion, from 1.8 to 2l, i've searche don the forum and found loads of info all useful but all equally confusing to me! So i have a few questions, bare with me!
1. What has to be done to the distributor to make it work properly?
2. What happens to the oil cooler, will it bolt on the 2l block?
3. Does it use all the original 1.8 water pump radiator etc?
4. Which breather on the 2l has to be blocked off?
5. Which 2l block is most practical for the conversion?

And if theres anything else anybody wants to chuck in for good measure i'd really appreciate it, sorry for all the Q's thanks in advance Rich  :D

I think he means what engine are you dropping in there… An 8v or a 16v? 6a/9a would be the best bet if it's a 16v you want. Could use the ABF but there are clearance issues that have to be resolved in a mk1.

Check out these clubgti links for pretty much everything you need to know if it's a 16v.

Answers to all your questions.
1.What has to be done to the distributor to make it work properly?
You need to take the spline off the bottom of your 2ltr dizzy on put it on your mk1 dizzy. To use your mk1 dizzy you need an adaptor ring to make the difference in the size of hole on the block. Once this is fitted you will then be able to adjust the timeing in the same way as when doing it in your mk1.

2. What happens to the oil cooler, will it bolt on the 2l block?
You can use the oil cooler that is on the 2ltr block which is water cooled instead of the air cooled one on the mk1. If you wish to use an air cooled version you can buy an adapter plate but there is no need.

3. Does it use all the original 1.8 water pump radiator etc?

Water pump is exactly the same so all your hoses will meet up.

4. Which breather on the 2l has to be blocked off?
The breather doesnt have to be blocked up. people have different ideas about this TSR do blanking plates mainly to tiedy up the engine bay and give you some where to mount your warm up reg in a good position so it gets max temp from the block. Sometimes these breathers just vent off to a catch tank.

5. Which 2l block is most practical for the conversion?

2e from passat / mk3 golf. Or an Audi 80 sport but this has a differnt engine code and is harder to find.  The 2e is 12mm taller although someone is bound to say different.

Yeah the 2e is the longer block and doesnt rev aswell , the shorter blocks known as bubble blocks literally have bulges in the castings for the extra crank duration and these rev alot better . Take mr mk1turbo`s advice , buy his block for sure ….. if its all running and ready to drop in it will save any headaches or problems

This may help, the bubble block has a 3a engine code, these engines are in audi 80's produced between 89 and 91. you can use the existing dizzy, and just advance the timing a touch (no vac advance on 3a engine) car will run ok. You can pick up audi 80's for about a hundred quid off ebay without MOT, weigh the audi in for scrap after you'll get about 50 quid for that so the conversion has cost you about ?50…ish. You do need new head gasket about a tenner!

Get an audi 80 sport. Sell the 3 spoke steering wheel, VDO gauges, rear spoiler and clocks on ebay. Free conversion
