2l 16v... What gearbox?

My MK1s coming off the road next month so i can start to restore it over the winter.
Current engine is a 1.5 single carb
Plans are to run a 2l 16V with carbs.

However i'm at a loose end as to what gearbox (and engine infact) to run.

Ideally i'd like to put an ABF in with a cable change box and hydro clutch i know that a custom engine mount will need to be fitted, however does anyone know how hard/howmuch extra work would be involved if i did this? Is it really worth the extra work?
I'm also under the impression i can just use a MK2 gearbox and use the same mounts.

OR

Do i just use a 9a and swap out the inlet cam. I was thinking of using a mk2 GTi 16v gearbox (unless it's the same?) as i believe this means i can use the same mounts.

I've left my notes i had with gearbox codes etc at home (sad i know!) so excuse my shabby post.

If anyone has any other gearbox sugestions please let me know.

Cheers
Ed

either engine will work oput pretty much the same, abf is a bit taller so that means you have to be carefull when choosing the 4 branch. the one storm sells fits apparently.
abf blocks are a bit stronger, also due to taller block the rod ratio is a little better. non of the above you'll really notice anyway, but the abf blocks will be newer which is worth considering.

can use either box on either engine, this is a personal call.  with the 02a box you'll need to make/buy a custom box mount and mount the cable shifter. hydro clutch will take a fair bit of fabrication, or you can use the hydro->cable conversion kit from a SEAT ABF or TDI.

020 boxes have a better shift feel, but also are weaker than the 02a. with normal power levels in alight MK1 shell the 020s can cope, but if going for big power you should consider the 02a.

Thanks very much buddy.
Only going to be running it with carbs and a quick polish and maybe some slightly lumpy cam. Shouldn't be much more powerful than a standard ABF on leccy injection so i think an 020 would be fine.

Am i right in thinking if i use an ABF with a 020 box i won't need to move/buy any mounts?

exactly, all bolts on as per oem using MK1 1.5-1.8 engine mounts and 5 speed box mounts.  only mod required is a bit of chopping on the cambelt cover as it doent have clearnace for the mk1 mount. mk2 covers dont fit due to the extra tallness
