2.0l 16v cab that holds the revs after lifting off?

Hi all, hope some one can shed some light on this problem, i've just got back from a 155mile trip to pick up a 2.0l 16v cab and found that when i lift off the throttle it holds the revs for a couples of seconds then if you dip the clutch it has an errattic tickover?
thought my be a vaccume leak but no joy, any ideas?? :dontknow:
