2.0 9A 16V +KR HEAD+MK1 GTI GEARBOX in mk1 83"

Hi!Some time ago i was thinking about put a turbo in a mk1 engine, but the engine was old and not much strongly and i tought it wasn't a good idea,so i decided to change the whole engine and now this is the start,i hope it will have a happy finish….(I'M SURE)
So…

Hi!This is the post of the conversion of my mk1.I.I inherited it of my grandfather and i like this car for his beuty and for the senses it gives to me.
Because of it i thought i had to made it usable, and the motor was near to its limit.
So i get a new heart and start to give it a new life.

Lets start with the photos:

Before the operation:

Ready to get it out:

I have no more photos of this process because my movil phone decided to stop.

The engine comes from a passat 2.0 16v 9A,it was quite dirty but the engine is in a very good state.

A photo of the passat:

I modify the mount of the passenger side as it's necesary to do,i will post a photo as soon as i can.

Some thigs have arrived from England, the fuel pressure regulator, the gearbox 5v mount,…

Using cartcher to have the motor cleaned

Some pics of my girling 60,they were dirty but they looks really good right now…

Some photos of the clean of the wishbones:

Some water later…

And a paint…

The fuel pressure regulator:

Here the other engine, the kr,as i said i'm using the head and intake manifold because it's bigger than the 9A.

both

The allmost one centimeter of difference between the conducts of intake manifold of kr and 9a,the kt is bigger.

A photo of VDO clocks i've mounted:

KR motor, just the head was usable:

Some pieces disambled:

KR head:

both,9A is in a very very goof state:

My father trying to fix the motor to do it not dance…jejeje

Some gaskets changed,it lefts the clutch and making the timing(i don't know if it's well wrote),the final motor, half 9A half kr,some people has told me it's now an abf(mk3 16v 150cv)

Now it's the turn of the brakes,in these photos i had to cut the piece that is around the brakes to cover them because the gilirng 60 are just a little(haha) bigger than the original mk1 brakes…the adapters mounted and the wheels mounted to check it don't make contact

The updates…not much but anyway i'm posting them.I was supposed to put the motor in but it wasn't able to do it because the gearbox i was waiting for arrived never, now i have one of a mk1 gti but i just can work in the car at weekends…so the next weekend i will try to put it tin.
I change the clutch and the motor flywheel,i put the kr flywheel because it's lighter,3kg more or less, maybe too much…we'll see….
RPM will increase faster and faster…jejeje

These are the tools i used to loosen the clutch…it was strongly pressed…my father lost a nail trying to put it out and then he continued helping me like a champion!
we used these for the first 5 screws:

I think i'm going to have the flywheel and the    equilibrate because the weight of the flywheel is much less and the motor can crash faster…

Removing the old clutch was the hell….my father lost a nail trying to unpress the screws, finaly we did it whith this:

the last scew with this:

new clutch with just 800km

We can now able to appreciate the difference of the size:

I have to look for the new 9 screws because 9A are not the same than KR.

Before:

After:

Both flywheels to compare them:

A couple of pics in the "precision weighting machine":

kr:

9A:

The gearbox mount,it came up from England and the suspensison wihtout the motor….is very high!!

I clean up the engine bay,i did it with a water hiah pressure machine, then i clean it more but no photos of it.

A photo of the modified mount beacuse as i told before it was a 1.1 and the passenger(here in Spain) mount must be adapted.

Hi looking good how far are you along now?

nice thread mate, good job!

btw, the difference in intake runner diameter is not specifically a KR to 9A difference.  You've just been lucky to get a large bore intake.  Depends on the car it came from etc etc.  All it actually does is moved the torque curve, loads of threads on this on CGTI.

On a side note, It's also possible to get the 16V Scirocco inlets with the two runner diams.  I helped a mate in the US source one for his track 16V rocco…

I won't claim to know the details tbh…the 16V thread on CGTI has links to more on peopels experiances with the two setups…

GVK did have his RR curves for the two set ups on there but I think with time some net links have broken on the old threads.
