2.0 8v on carbs?

Hi guys, is anyone running or know of anyone using a 2.0 8v (AGG, 3A, and the others) and running a carb set up?

Not going down this route right now but researching for ze future

Cheers

Problematic due to heatsoak, due to the inlet ports being on the same side of the engine as the exhaust. (On a 16V they're on opposite sides). Still possible though, but probably just as easy to go with fuel injection.

I'm not really a fan of carbs on an 8v, like said heat soak is bad. Plus sidedraughts are better facing forwards to on coming air flow if you want to maximise efficiency.

What about getting a weber 32/34 jetted to suit or finding another carb that would sit on top of a carb inlet manifold?
Would a carb like that be too restrictive?

I suppose the other option would be to get a crossflow head, but like you say once you start spending that money it could be better invested towards injection / 16v.

Carb or carbs? Its quite possible to 'upgrade' a 1.5, 1.6 or 1.8 carb engine with a 2.0 but keep it on its original carb, suitably rejetted. I'd recommend the Weber rather than trying to rejet the original Pieburg or Solex carb, simply because the Weber is less complicated and more widely supported. Many carb VWs have had a Weber replacement anyway. It won't be a performance mod (for more power) as such, but it will be a reasonable solution and save the hassle with fuel injection.

I'm thinking ahead for a possible future conversion. I've got a weber 32/34 at the moment. Could it be rejetted to take advantage of the larger capacity engine? Along with opening up via polishing and porting a gti head?
Would you that start to give you decent power gains or are you still fighting a battle that would be better fought elsewhere…i.e. 16v

Was told this week that mk4 8 v heads are cross flow and fit so there is another option so the carbs would be on the front, ill ask the guy again to see exactly what it was he said about that

I looked into cross flow heads and there are a few you can use. I seem to remember the ones from the new beetle seemed to be popular; think you have to block off one of the oil ways but apart from that it's bolt on (don't quote me on that!).

Like I say, if I do use a 2.0 litre block, I'll use an AGG (apparently produces more torque) and just use my weber 32/34 until I decide to do more. It should keep costs (original outlay and running) small and should provide a nice, fun car to play around with (plus it'll be my daily driver).
