2.0 16v abf in mk1
im about to start this project, i have a complete mk3 golf as donor, reading other threads it sounds like when fitted this engine is a bit tall and hits the bonnet, what should i do about this? also it sounds like it would be easier to use the gearbox from a mk2 16v. has anyone gone down the route of fitting the cable change box from mk3? its going in a 1.3! thanks for any help

I think it only hits the bonnet if you use the existing fuel injection, if you swap to K-Jet injection it all fits. Of course, you don't have the other fuel system parts to do this, so you'd need to replace a few more bits if you start from a 1.3.
You could use the 02A gearbox but you'd need to fabricate or purchase (quite pricey) mounts; and mount the gearshift in the car (not that hard if you are okay to ditch the centre console). Also you'd need to convert to cable change clutch (there's a bunch of Seat parts you can buy to enable this). I think you can buy bits to convert to rod (instead of cable) change but I'm unsure which parts you'd need.
Bear in mind also, you'll end up with higher ratios if you use the 02A - do you really want higher gear ratios?

so i would really want to just transplant the engine and box together, seeing as i already have the bits. is the o2a box my box or the 1.8 16v? suppose it just a case of suck it and see. once i have the old engine out and the new placed in i will be able to see what i need. i know i will have to move the right mount for the engine to where the gti would be. so you say i will need to fab a mount for the gear box? thanks
is there any way of using the injection system on the mk3 without it hitting the bonnet?

02A is the Mk3 16V box, ie attached to the ABF engine. If you swap to the 020 (as in the Mk1 GTI and others) transmission, you can also (well you need to) use the 020's flywheel and clutch, which are much lighter anyway.
Oh yes, you'll need to move the engine mount. Also you'd need to address issues such as braking and suspension, etc…… so its more involved starting from a 1.3.

but if you used the o2o gearbox and clutch would th clutch be ok with the power increase? you say i would end up with higher gear ratios using the mk3 box 02a, so if i fitted the o2o box it would be quicker bottom end?

Clutch is okay for the power - fit a 16V pressure plate and match the friction disc to the gearbox (some boxes have a 24mm input shaft, eg 16V boxes and certain late Mk3 ones).
The lower the ratios, the quicker the acceleration of the car but the lower your eventual top speed will be. But in my opinion, the Mk1 Golf isn't really aerodtynamically great above something like 110mph, so you don't need to increase top speed. Of course, if the rpm per speed is lower (ie higher ratio gearbox), motorway cruising, fuel efficiency and quietness are better - but what are you fitting the engine for - refinement?!?!?!?

ha, well no. just thought i have engine and box and everything else so thought it would be easier just to put it in as one. as for brakes i will be using the mk3 set up hopfully, then some of the cheapy coilovers for the suspension.

If you tune the 16v then traction in 1st and second could be an issue so the longer gearing may be a benefit... Will also reduce 0-62 time as should be able to hit 62 in 2nd... Just a thought.

Mk3 braking setup won't fit the mk1. Best / cheapest bet is to look out the vauxhall setup in the braking faq.

i have an abf with a 020 box and i am quite a slow driver.
and i've broken the box. now i'm thinking of changing to cable change.

will i need the engine mounting from a mk1 gti (mount that is bolted to engine) to fit onto the abf engine so i can mount it up on the timing belt side?

I'm using my 020 box, but buying a spare ready, and when i need it, i'll buy another spare. lol
as for the engine mount, yeah you need that one!
