16v on twin carbs HELP!

Hi all, just signed up as im in desperate need of your help. I have a mk1 cabby that had a 1.8 mechanical injection engine in it. I then bought a mk2 driver for the 1.8 16v on twin dellortos it had running in it. Since iv removed the mk2 16v engine and put it in the mk1 it no longer runs! Now this is more than likely something iv messed up but any and all help is need here guys. The wiring is a big issue for me as i cant seem to find wiring info for a twin carb 16v? Maybe im looking in the wrong places lol?
Anyway i will be posting loads of pictures of the build as the bay is super shaved and a massive job of a servo side change has been done "you'll love that".

Cheers all

Mick.

This might sound silly, but are you using the mk2 ECU and TCI?

Some people reckon you can run a 16v on twin carbs without an ECU.

You use the mk2 loom for the conversion so check all your loom is hooked up right i guess… As usual you can thank RubJonny for this…

1 - Earth to battery -ve
2 - KR ign controller plug
3 - TCI-H plug
4 - Black - KR ign controller & TCI-H ign live - terminal 15 side of coil
5 - Green - Coil trigger - terminal 1 side of coil
\- red/black - spade is for the isv control unit, the main wire is the rev counter feed
6 - Brown - Earth to cylinder head
7 - Blue/white - Temp sensor feed (use one of the 3 on the side of the head)
8 - Dizzy plug
9 - red/yellow - Fuel pump relay earth trigger
\- black/yellow - idle switch feed (12v feed with throttle shut)

Make sure the earths are all good from the ECU to the battery and head (1) & (6). I had problems starting because of (6) not earthing good enough on the head, so I ran it to the battery - for a solid earth.

Did you actually see the engine running on the carbs in the old mk2?

Im sure you'll get some help on here, just abit more info on what happens when you try and start it… and the big giant brains will jump at it.

Well the car the engine came out of didnt have an ECU in it. Just the little flat box that goes to the coil and to the dizzy!

Thanks for the info

Can you show us a pic of the "little flat box"?

I'm guessing the little flat box is the TCI.  In that case…

If that engine is a 1.8 16v out of a mk2 then you'll need to fit the ECU (the bigger box) for that car. £20 scrap yard job or on this forum.

Funny that the mk2 was running without an ECU… (well it will run on idle but not well to drive). Maybe that's what you've overlooked.. just forgot to swap over the ECU. I don't know where the ECU is on a Mk2 golf, maybe in the scuttle / rain tray…

Just checked for the ECU and there is only the cage its supposed to fit into there but no ECU. The "little black box" which i think is the TCI (whatever that means lol) has a piece of metal on the back if that helps.

Heres your TCI  (ignition module / amplifier) whatever you want to call it…

And heres your ECU…

And you follow the diagram posted earlier ^^ to wire it all up with the mk2 loom. Just plug it all in !

Fingers crossed.

On the diagram above does No.2 plug into the ECU they all look the same on that pic lol

Also if i need to get a loom and ECU is there a specific one i need to get?

Thanks for all this help guys ill get the next round in =)

Yup, that's right… it's the big plug that only goes into the ECU.

If you've got the TCI plugged in to your dizzy then you should have the ECU plug on the same loom - unless you've hacked it off…

The best thing would have been to take the loom and ECU with everything else you needed from the donor car the engine came from.
But if it's not still around for you then you can try ebay and the for sale section on this website.

BUT … could be barking up the wrong tree if it isn't a 16v…
You said it came out of a 1.8 Driver but its a 16v lump? Weren't 16v only in GTI's?
If you've got an engine code and some pics some clever buggers will have a pop at it…
I'm not down on my Mk2's so that's the limit of my knowledge i'm afraid. 8O

Its definately a 1.8 16valve twin cam just not to shore if its out of a MK2 golf or a carrado?

It might be worth putting that info in the electrics FAQ as this KR ECU and loom and distributor can also be used to convert the mk1 small blocks to electronic ignition.

Big thanks to Rubjonny for labelling up all those wires as it'll make the whole process much easier 8) I've copied his info over onto Club Polo as theres a few people on there who want to convert their early engines to elecronic ignition too, hope no-one minds!

Just using an early mk1 golf C rad with the gti fan on it as it has the expansion tank/cap built into the side. Also iv seen people use the BMW E36 rad as this also has an expansion tank on the side.
