16v Conversion, timing marks

Hi,

Im about to put the box back on the engine, im using a 1.6 box on a KR so ive got the 1.6 flywheel etc.  Question is what timing marks will i then use for timing the 16v?  do i have to make some new marks onto the flywheel?

Thanks

better to keep the KR flywheel and fit a later MK1 1.8 210mm clutch kit, it'll all bolt up to the KR and your old gearbox just fine!

If its too late for that, you can instead get a timing light with an advance dial in, then use the TDC marker.  Alternatively, measure the diameter of the fly and use some PI calculation to work out how many mm 6 degrees of advance works out at, measure from TDC and make your mark.

1.6 carb or GTI?
either way the ignition timing mark on these flywheels is in the wrong spot!

Wrong!!! The 210mm clutch does not fit the FD (1.6) Gearbox.  Trust me I learnt this from experiance……  The clutch will just spin around on the splines on the box as the 1.8 box had a bigger input shaft spline diameter.  You need a 200mm clutch, but you should realy utilise the KR flywheel mate thats the setup I have atm

No, sorry you are wrong. The later MK1 1.8 210mm clutch kit has the same sized splines as the 1.6 boxes

What you fitted was a 16v KR clutch kit, which as you say has bigger splines ;)

There are 2 size splines on 020 boxes, you have the std 1.5-1.8 8v size which has 24 splines, and the 1.8 16v/2.0 8v size which has 28 splines.

I know this from experience, as I also have a MK1 with a KR 16v engine and a FD box, running a 210mm clutch. Unless I'm mistaken and its not actually been driving me to work for the last 6 months

I didnt have the 16v flywheel so i just measured 6 degrees round the od and marked it with a grinder on the dremel, hopefully should be ok!

as long as your calculations were correct thats all you need. the haynes has the measurements in it for making your own 6gegree btdc mark on the fly
