16 valve help

Hi all im in the middle of putting a kr engine in a mk1.
It started as a 1.1 so i have moved and upturned the drivers engine mount etc and the engine is in and mounted up along with the gear linkage.

I got the car with no engine and a box of bolts so its fun and games all the way ha ha  :banghead:

Now the issues i have are
Distributor cap fouling the brake fluid reservoir (i have a new abf one which is a screw on one but im not mega keen on bodging it on) If i use a mk2 16v setup would a standard cap fit?

Next issue is my radiator
I have the standard rad and 1 out of a 1800 16v corrado i was thinking about unpicking the filler side off the mk1 and fiiting it to the rado rad but it wouldnt work as i would lose the fan switch.
Is there a rad that has the pipe outlet on the left side along with the fan switch? Or is there a rad which goes stright in.

I have hassled dealers and g s f too much ha ha so its your turn  :D

I have searched the site and found things useful but i didnt seem to find the info i was looking for.

HELP

for the distibutor you can use a cap off an audi 80 which angles the leads at 90 degrees.

can grab them on ebay etc

Correct me if I am wrong as it is a while since I stripped down an ABF distributor but doesn't that distributor (037 905 205 M, replaced by 037 905 237 CX) only have one cut out in the hall sender rotor? If it does, that is only for number 1 cylinder so when you try to start it, it will only fire on number one. This is because the ABF engine uses Digifant sequential electronic injection which uses a crank speed sensor and the distributor hall sender is only used to show the ECU where number 1 cylinder is. You could make it work by changing the rotor arm shaft for one from a KR distributor. The distributor I used to use when doing 16v Golf 1's is the one from an Audi 80 with a 6A 2 litre 16v engine (made from 03/90 to 7/92 for the 80 and Coupe) but the caps are very expensive to replace (077 905 207, about £55 genuine) and the leads can be pricey too, the caps are screw on rather than clip on. The original distributor part number was 053 905 205 C and then changed to 053 905 205 D and the exchange replacement from Audi is now 053 906 237 X but to buy it outright you would have to pay the surcharge, so about £200.

I am not sure what you want with the rad, do you want the top feed on thee left and the bottom feed on the right?

cant use abf dizzy because it doesnt have any adjustment, dizzy is fixed. what you can use is the abf dizzy cap, much cheaper than the audi 16v ones. rotate the dizzy 180 degrees and it fits straight on without any modifications. all you need is an 8v king lead from a MK2, as cap faces forward so oem 16v one doesnt quite reach.  I managed to take apart a spare 16v lead i had and put a different end on to suit:

std MK1/2 1.8 rad fits right in, just need to get the shroud, loom and rad pipes to go with it

dissy cap

OR u can use the dissy cap from a Fiat Strada (i think 1.3) or a Renault 5 (i think 1.0).They come out at the same 90deg angle and clears the reservoir!

or a talbot samba cap!

Yes but you need to use the pre 85 Golf 1 coil, not the 16v Golf 2 part, and the Golf 2 16v KR ignition leads won't work with the Fiat/Samba cap due to them needing a pole fitting.

as above, this is why i prefer the abf cap as it allows the use of proper vag parts, is cheap, and readily available from your favourite german parts supplier.

even more oem would be audi 16v dizzy and cap, these use bolt fixing and angled upwards, but for some reason the cap is several million dollar while abf cap is pretty much exactly the same just different orientation and way cheaper

Made some progress fellas i managed to pick up a servo and master cylinder off a corrado modified it and fitted it so now my cap fits (off an abf) it doesnt look bad so am happy with that.

Also got a rad with a cap gonna have a mess at weekend.

Also had a mess with the carbs to see about the fueling using r1 carbs and a matching fuel pump
I think i sussed it so i can keep the standard fuel lines coming in to the engine bay and keep it looking tidy.

Will have a mess this weekend

Cheers for the replies
