108 pcd on a mk1

hi i`m looking into options to convert the pcd on a mk1 to 108 pcd. apart from having the hubs redrilled is there another way this can be done ? i`d rather not use adapters as they`d push the wheels out further than i`d like , quite like the tucked look  8)  
has anyone on here done this conversion ? i`ve read that by redrilling to 108 you end up close to the edge of the hubs , so if i were to go down this route would it be better to use later mk2 hubs , are these larger than the mk1 hubs ?

i would rather have the wheels redrilled to 4x100 if possible, any decent machine shop should be able to sort this for you
