1.8T Rally Golf Gear Box.

Hi,

Not sure if posting this in the right place, but bought a Mk1 1.8T Rally golf. Only prob is she needs an engine and a gear box. Engine is not a problem but the gear box is. Not sure on what gear box will fit into it…Could anyone give me a hand and let me know?

Do you still have the old engine? Is your current 'box 5speed?

I'm 99.9% sure if you have a 1.8T lump in your car it will have an 02A cable change box.

If you reply to this, answering the above questions, i should be able to tell you where to look on your engine/gearbox to confirm the above theory.

If its the o2a cable change box then just about any other o2a from say a passat, g60 or corrad would do the job i reckon.

I am looking for a 02a gear box, or a similar gear box to fit into the car. I'm putting a 1.8 turbo eninge either a Audi TT engine or Cupra R Engine (T28s Turbo). What gear box would go in with it? wud the TT Gear box go in?

If your putting a 1.8T in there, you'll need to pay attention to the different engine codes as these will make the job alot easier.

If you can get the engine and gearbox at the same time, and try your hardest to get an AGU coded engine, as little things like the rad pipes are on the right side of the block to match the MK1 rad mountings. (saves loads of extra pipework, which saves you weight)

a TT gearbox wont work as your going from a 4WD to a 2WD, a TT 'box is a quattro box.

Your best bet for donor cars that will work will be: Golf MK4 1.8T, Audi A3 1.8T (non quattro) and Scoda Octavia VRS. (2000 - 2003 i think)

Right, you've got more chance of finding a pooing rocking horse, than finding a Rallye gearbox!! lol

Plus the rallye is 4WD, so no good to you. (is basically a Syncro gearbox with a harder bell housing)

I also doubt a rallye box will mate with the 20v Turbo lump.

If you want to go 1.8 20v, you'll need the gearbox that goes with the engine which is 02A and you'll need to convert your car to hydraulic/cable change (which is better than rod-change anyway)

The 150 BHP versions are deffinately only front wheel drive. I think it is only the 225's that are 4WD…

Yeah i say thats the same engine as A3 1.8T non quattro
