1.8 Turbo in Rivage, complete beginner

Hey all, was thinking about putting a 1.8 turbo engine into my rivage, i was thinking on doing it myself but have no knowledge or experience of engines.

Do you think it's an achievable thing to do or is something like that really not something a complete beginner should be attempting?

Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated!

Someone who could do it for me would be appreciated even more

There's plenty of VW tuning shops which could do the conversion for you, it would cost a bit though. And I can't think of any near you (whereabouts is Somerset in relation to you??? TSR are there).

DIY is possible but if you've not removed/replaced an engine before, it will be a head scratcher for sure. There is always the walk-thru on www.fastgolf.org.uk and there's the FAQ thread here, it takes a bit of wading through though.

Many thanks, it would depend where in Somerset to be honest, I have helped someone remove and replace an engine before but was literally just muscle (and not much of that to be honest)

What sort of cost would it be to get TSR to do it?

Would like to do it myself but don't want to risk messing up my car!

You'd have to contact TSR. If you're willing to travel, then other firms such as:

MV Developments
Awesome GTI (Manchester)
The Phirm
+ lots I've missed out, no doubt

Could quote you too. bens_cab has also done conversions for people but I'm unsure if he's set up to do this in his new location (Kent).

You've got start somewhere, what is your level of mechanical skill, bolting the block in is quiet straight forward, the electrics may be tricky but have been done many times before in many ways, the plumbing is logical, if you plan it out you should be ok.

Very limited experience but i'm intelligent enough to be able to follow instructions think i'd have more trouble with technical terms

Sounds like a good project for you and maybe a couple of mates, depending on if the car is your daily or not you can take your time and get as far as your skillset and the web will take you and if you need a pro to finish it some like MV Developments offer a mobile service so could come to you to either finish it at yours if it is something simple say the wiring or tow it back to their workshop to finish it for you, if you had to go that route at least you'd save a fair few ? in labour plus would have probably upped your skillset a fair bit in the process.

Cool, i'd start then by thinking of which route you intend to take as far as the engine management is concerned, basically original ecu or after market,
original is probably easiest but may require the right keys dash and loom,
aftermarket is costly and will require tuning, but may be simpler to install,

By the way i'm no authority on 20v turbo's just in case i get some thing wrong,

As far as engines go i'm led to believe the early golf is the easiest to install but may be getting harder to find, mounts are available of the shelf from some tuning places, depending on what gearbox you go for you may need new mounts for that too,

I've got a 2.0l mk4 lump in my mk1 and fitting was no harder than fitting the original clipper engine, i just had to modify the side engine mount,

Good luck, you love it!

When you say the original ecu is that the one that comes with the engine or the one in the car already? I'm assuming it's pretty straightforward to remove the engine and stick another one in but the complicated bit will be joining all the components together and getting the engine working
