1.8 to 2L

is it possible to bore a 1.8 16v engine to 2l? iv never had anything to do with engine work before and this is my 1st vw engine over 1.3!  
           i know somebody that will do the work for me if its possible. he will more than likley be refurbing the engine anyway so thought i might aswell ask.

if your gonna rebuild the engine then you dont need to bore the engine. just buy a 2l bottom end. thats what im doing. youl need a 9a or 6a bottom end. your gonna need bigger piston rings, gasket set, etc.

If you bought a different bottom end, its possible you'd need to recondition that too, so it might not be as cost effective as re1900 thinks. Normally during a rebuild you'd 'rebore' very slightly, just to remove wear from the bores. So you might as well rebore to 2 litres. I've heard its one of the better things to do out there.

yeh thats the way i was thinking. im no expert tho. also im not sure if thrs enough room between the cooling system and the cylinder to bore out to 2L??

I think you're right. You can easily go to 1.9 litres, with a rebore. Anything more and you have to stroke it too. If you go up to 2.1 litres, the longer stroke means you cannot rev so high (6500rpm instead of 7000rpm).

Check out http://www.tsr-performance.com/ for ideas. Their prices are high, though, so if you can do a lot of the engine work cheaper, then that sounds like a good option.
