1.8 8v GTI Cabby Engine upgrade 1991

Hi Chaps/Chapet's

Hope all is well,

I have a slight problem and looking for a solution,

I currently have a 1.8 8v GTi cabby which is running extremely rough after a little bit of tinkering i have narrowed it down to the metering unit which seems to be flooding the engine looking at several posts on here it seems its a common thing.

1. Where can i find a metering unit for the current engine?

2. If i want to change the engine to a more improved one and minimal work etc whats the easiest engine to do this with someone has suggest a Mk3 engine or even a seat Ibiza GTI engine..

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

kr would be easiest swap, most expensive bit would be exhaust, mainly the conversion manifold. uses your mounts, gear box and should have 100mm driveshafts so use them also. and its 139bhp stock if im not mistaken and is least wiring. or abf engine which is newer but more wiring.

or cheaper source a metering head from somebody breaking a gti? look in breaking car section.

Mk2 golf gti. 16v engine.
Abf is mk3 gti 16v.

Ha it's cool. I did Kr (well 9a bottom end from corrado.) it's simpleish had mine on carbs. Rebuilt the head so was as new.

Speaking to my mate who is a mechanic,

The metering head on the KR engine are these reliable? Looking at forums everyone is always having issues with metering heads?

If i can source a 2.0 litre 8v engine from a Mk3 GTI will this engine slot straight in with minimal effort?

The 16v engines do they take more effort in terms of wiring etc?

I just want to slot an engine into it that uses the existing mounts.

Sorry for all the questions..

The 8v and 16v use same mounts upto mk3 I believe. Aslong as there big block engines ie. not 1.0/1.3 etc.

Not overly sure on the wiring but on injection, think on Kr you wouldn't need to alter much. I ran mine on carbs so just and ignition loom was needed. Sure I've asked and gti wiring can be used on Kr/9a (9a is corrado engine) but abf is tricky wiring wise but can achieve more from the abf with more ease. Suppose 8v will
Have a lot less on so wiring would be straighter forward I think.

Depends how much you want from the car mate, in my eyes if it's a daily I'd stick with a gti. If you handy with spanners then I'd say a good weekends work will swap it over.

If its not daily I'd take my time and put a nice 16v in there with the leisure that suits.

Its more a leisure thing for me i have a mk6 2.0 TDI that does the job on a day to day my cabby is going to be more a weekend job for me..

Personally i just want the easiest conversion with the best results but without future hassle.

Really appreciate your time on replying matey

I'd say go Kr mate in all honesty as any problems you can overcome with help and it is pretty straight forward the swap. If your mates a mechanic your a winner. Totally upto you, before going drastic and swapping engines. Have you read the fuel injection topic in the technical section <——— in the margin that side? Maybe try sort the metering head or replace or if this doesn't suit you look at swaps then. Theres plenty of info out there on most swaps just gotta look in right place for em.

Yeah im looking into it now i have asked a few people re a metering head i have 2 mates who are mechanics 1 works for BMW and the other works for an independent both have said the metering heads on these and on the Fords was always shocking.. I guess i have a good few months before i get it back on the road just about sorted the wiring bits out..

Im just concerned that if the KR uses the same system then im in the same boat so may as well stick to what i have

Could always go carbs what you manually adjust?
No engine once in will be problem free forever though.

Carbs are ok but thirsty and inaccurate of fuel inlet. Basically balance em and let them put in as much as they can. Again if not daily not a big worry. Do sound nice though.
