1.8 16v Conversion Questions

Ok I'm using a KR from a Mk2 Golf. I have used the 16v pulleys for the crank and water pump is this the normal thing?

Also what do people do with the airbox as the 16v one is massive and won't fit, looks to me as if a Mk2 GTI 8v one would do the trick?

There's a FAQ on this.

The water pump pulley - which one are you using? Did the car have power steering? Beware if its the double pulley, one of them (the one you need to work) freewheels so the water pump isn't driven properly! You need the single pulley from a KR without power steering.

The airbox - cut a slot in the base of the Mk1 airbox and sit it on the chassis leg, using the Mk2 induction pipework and metering head (transfer from one to another).

Yeh it did have PAS, I just bolted the all the pulleys back up including the PAS pulley just ditched the belt.

I don't have a Mk1 airbox standard, it was a 1.8carb with a K&N pancake when I got it.

PAS Pulley - I removed the power steering pump (including its pulley). If you run it dry, it will soon seize, if you don't have the belt on its just extra weight.

No doubt sometihng else could be cobbled together but the Mk1 Airbox will take the metering head on top quite nicely, needs only a few mods to reposition the breather and fits the gap okay.

Yeh I ditched the whole PAS system but the pulley on the water pump doesnt seem to mount up correctly without the pas pulley. Will it still seize up if its ran without the belt, or am I better going to the breakers yard and getting a non-pas pulley just.

I dont understand - will what seize if its run without the belt?

The water pump pulley on non-PAS cars is different to the twin pulleys on PAS ones. There's 2 variations of pulleys on the PAS cars though, unsure if both have the freewheeling pulley or just one. Mine did.

Will the PAS pulley seize I meant sorry.

If the PAS belt is removed, the pulley won't turn, so the PAS pump won't turn.

But the waterpump also wont turn, due to its double pulley having one part which is connected to the pump (crank - PAS pump - water pump) and one part which freewheels (crank - water pump - alternator).

I think you need to look at the water pump and spin each pulley in different directions, to understand it.

Nice one mate, I had a look today and see what you mean. KR non PAS pulley it is then.

Is the standard 1.8 carb fuel lift pump in the tank going to be ok or does it need replaced for a 16v item, I have the high pressure under floor 16v pump already.

I don't know, I converted a hatchback.

lift pump isnt man enough you need a k-jet injection pump. was the car k-jet before? if so the existing pump & lines are fine, just need to bend the lines over to the driver side carefully, or buy new crazyquiff 16v conversion lines.

as for airbox i used an early MK2 16v airbox as its narrower, works better than the mk1 airbox if you use the full 16v isv setup as it has the correct pipes on it for isv and over-run cutoff. chop the entire bottom half of it off so it sits low enough, use the 90spec 16v inlet boot as its shallower.
