1.4 16v into a mk1?

hi the idea is to fit a 1.4 16v out of a polo into my 1.1 mk1 golf need all the info i can get realy thinking about running it on some r6 bike carbs!

if i do this how much of the engine electrics would i be able to junk and wot distrubutor would work and wot would i do about the vacuum advance? and will the polo engine line up to the small block mounts? seriously any help will be amazing!

planning on buying a polo 16v donor car so wot bits should i salvage?

basically you'll want everything from the polo engine and all the ancillaries. as for the wiring i'm not sure just rip it all out of the polo and then when you come to wiring it in be prepared for a lot of head scratching. as for the mounts again not sure but i imagine they will be in diferent places so take them from the polo too.

im not too scared of wiring im a mechanic by trade so im sure i can sort most things out but its just better to find everything out before i jump straight into it after all theres no point making problems that could be avoided by a little bit of advice

It's been done a few times now. Have a search.

ive searched quite abit just none of the conversions ive found realy seem clear about wot i need to know, found a few things out like using a coupe s ditributor and and having to change the pulley on the mk1 alternator to the 16v multi rib type

I think the mounts are the same, apart from the rear gearbox mount which you'll need to fabricate.

My mate has done this, he used a standard polo coupe S/mk2 golf vacuum advance distributor and the electronic ignition amp and loom from one of those same cars.

The flywheel needs swapping with the 1.3 one as the 16v one isnt compatible with the 1.3's gearbox. (The starter motor doesnt turn it) You cant use the 16v gearbox because the driveshaft flanges are different.

The alternator pulley needed changing as said^^, but also needed shimming out so it was level with the engines pulley.

He saved messing about with ECUs and fuel injection by fitting bike carbs, so i couldnt offer any advice about that unless you did the same.

Apart from that its just the standard 5 speed gearbox mount fabbing (if you choose to fit one) that needs doing.

i would be fitting bike carbs to the car thats the main attraction to fitting the engine would like abit of power ya know

also if i chose to fit a 5 speed box would there  be any messing about with the gear linkages to make it work? thanks for all the help that last post has realy cleared up some of my worries

No the gear linkage should be the same :D

A couple more things, if you're using a five speed 'box the rear box mount will need a little notch cutting into one side of it to fit, you'll see what I mean when you try n fit it.

Also only 2 of the 3 bolts for the drivers side engine mount can be used on this engine.

These are not even worth worrying about tho.

If your after a bit of power why not go for a bigger engine?

it does make sense to go for a kr or sumat quite large like that but i realy like the idea of a small but powerful engine and im only 19 so it does need to be quite insurance friendly so if i get 140bhp out of the 1.4 (probably optimistic there) i rekon it will be plenty quick enough coming from a 1.6 audi a3

Worth getting quotes then.....it might be cheaper to insure a more/less standard GTI than a modified 1.4 16V.

yea ive looked bud and it will be cheaper but it wont be as fast or as fun, and the allure of carbs is way too much to pass off so now my minds made up anything else i need to think about before i start?

My mate got his one tuned up at Bogg Bros, and fitted a rev limiter with launch control.

He managed to get in the 14s at santa pod at the weekend.

not bad an yea i will be heading to bogg brothers for the final tuning its pretty close to me so it makes sense and was that on standard a standard engine just with carbs or did he have other mods?

Yeah just a standard engine :D  The launch control makes a big difference tho.

I have just found out that some of my info is wrong

Apparently the 16v flywheel and starter ARE needed when using the 1.3's gearbox.

Apologies! :banghead:

haha no worries i read that on edition aswell but anyway any info is good info tho, would be nice for this to be made abit more of a permenant thread as it seems quite a viable conversion for people with small block shells just like a kr is for the big block shells
