1.1 to 1.8 kjet...

i know there is probably loads of these been done but i am struggling to find previous post about this conversion! if anyone could either link me to a previous post or answer my few questions i would be greatful!

i'm buying a mk1 1.8 k-jet engine with all the running gear, gearbox, interior loom, bay loom, fuel pump etc,

do i need to get a gti fuel tank or is the 1.1 ok to use?
do i have to move the mounts that are in the bay like the drivers side one does it need to be flipped and moved?
can i use my 1.1 loom and buy an adapter to save ripping all the wiring out as i'm not 100% sure with wiring?
it comes with gearbox mount but no others anyone no what other mounts i will need?

thanks jay

Might be quicker/easier/cheaper just to buy a GTI (and save a rare poor little 1100);

Cut from a reply from 5+ years ago….

This gets asked a lot. It's not impossible but requires lots of time effort and money. Its much more involved than simply dropping in the new lump.

Things that will need changing;
If you are starting with a small block (1100/1300 engine) the drivers side mount needs relocating on the chassis leg. This involves cutting, grinding and welding.
The fuel supply is different from carburettor models. You will need the fuel pump, accumulator, tank, pipe work and all the bracketery from a donor GTI.
Engine electrics are different, you will need parts from a donor car (relay etc)
The exhaust is different (very different if starting from a small block car)
The gearbox will be totally different if starting from a small block car and will have the wrong ratios if starting from a big block car.
The steering rack is different if starting from a small block car.
The gear linkage is different if starting from a small block car
The clutch cable is different if starting from a small block car
The accelerator cable is different
The cooling plumbing will be different (more different if starting with a small block)

Things that should be changed
The GTI had up rated brakes and suspension that the original carb model won't have.

Other things
The GTI had sports seat (easy to upgrade) and black headlining (difficult to upgrade)
It still won't be a genuine GTI when you come to sell it and may cause difficulties with insurance companys as you will have a modified car.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

you can use a late cab/rocco and g40 shape polo lift pump and reservoir instead of the gti tank, but its a bit of a squeeze to get both the reservoir and the accumulator under a mk1 (cab/rocco use different shape tank and smaller accumulator)

if you have the engien loom it'll plug right in, assuming you have same fusebox so check that. the dash loom wont be requred but you will want the rear loom for the fuel pump wires. if you have the old ceramic fusebox and you have a complete later blade type loom though i would swap the lot over as its way better, if you have the early dash you'll need to do some splicing though. if you have later dash you might have to change a couple of the dash switches but thats it
