Hi Just looking at this conversion, but new to the golf scene. The 020 box, is this the standard mk1 Gti box? Sorry if its a stupid question

yes the 020 box is the standard (big block) fitment on the mk1, also fitted to other models.

If you want to use this box for 20vt,
-you can keep your gear change as its a rod change mechanism, same as mk2 golfs and mk3 8v.
-Advisable to uprate your clutch and flywheel
-and most likely change your inner flange cups to 100mm
but people prefer to use the mk3 gti 16v hydraulic box.

if you going through the hole converstion and doing it your self you might aswell go for 02a/02j gearbox. much stronger and better gearing feel (even better with audi tt short shift and rebuilt tower) if its a budget build then 020 will do but its lottery how long it will last. i remember my g60 in mk1 020 lasted 50 miles
