Your views, purchasing my first Golf.

m in a split mind as to wether to purchase an 89 GTI cab it has 55k on the clock and is in a a pretty good condition the roof has recently been replaced and the bulkhead has also been done,
the downsides are that it would have to be my every day car (I only live 3 miles from work) the front wings need resprayed (fortunatley my uncle has offered to do them for nothing as he is a sprayer)  Also im not the greatest when it comes to mechanics My dad knows what hes doing though it would be unfair to rely on him all the time, The Brakes need replacing and the steering needs to be looked at also, I do love the car and feel I would be able to give it the attention it needs, its for sales for ?2195 but with the work that needs to be done what do you think would be a fair offer or if indeed that is a fair price to start with.

What do you think?

Cheers

?2195 is fairly high given the faults: paintwork required on 2x wings, steering issues, brake issues. I'd say more like ?2000 with the faults resolved; or ?1500-1600 as is. How much tax and MoT does it have? Makes a big difference to price.

PS Mileage is pretty meaningless, you need to go by condition. There are lots of low mileage cabbys out there because they were often bought as second cars, or driven by women who went to the shops & back, etc. that kinda use. In some ways, regular use is better.

?600 then. Get it MoT'd before you buy it, especially if you're not confident with cars and Mk1 Golfs specifically, walk away if he cannot do this, there's plenty others with MoT which will be perfectly useable.

like paul has said, for the asking price they are dreaming!!!!!

I brought a 44k cabby blind on ebay, when it turned up it was a rot box, buy tidy looking car with 2000000 miles than a dog with low miles!

I'd agree with the mileage statement, mines done 150k and it doesnt look or run half as bad as cars with half the mileage.
