Would you put your baby/small child in your MK1??

Hi there!

This is my first post as I'm picking up my first mk1 golf (cabby) on Saturday.

Now this is going to be a weekend/nice weather car. I have a modern car for daily use. But we are expecting a baby in august and I just wondered what peoples opinions were on putting child seats and babys in these cars.

I'm worried about safety in a crash obviously, and as I said to my wife, ill probably know wether I'd feel comfortable with it once I've owned the car a

couple of months.
It would only be used for short journeys with the baby but obviously an accident can happen anywhere!

It would be nice if all 3 of us could enjoy the car, but obviously if its regarded as a bit risky it won't be happening.

Thanks for any help/advice

Take a look at the buying guide on the main page, right hand side. It's got great info on all the added strengthening that went into the cabby.
I think it goes down to personal preference, but like you said, accidents can happen at any time, In any car.
I would be happy to have my sister's child in my car, so long as it wasn't sick :p

Hi there Chadders,

Welcome to the site. You should find a lot of info on here.

As for young ones in the car. Thats a hard one. There are a lot of fools out there on the road!

Hi, me and my two brothers travelled in the back of my dads old mk1 when we were kids and we are still around to tell the tale. I can't see as it would be any more or less safe than your daily drive, unless you had a smart car.  :D

I didn't have any problem putting my little boy in my old mk1.

What you do need to know is you want be able to put a child seat in the back of a cabby as they don't have 3 point seat belts, you can retro fit them as they were avaiable in the US but very hard to find or crazyquiff does/did do a kit to fit them.

I have decided against having my daughter in back of my cabby, just because of the difficulty of getting a car seat that works only using a lap belt.

Like you mine is only for a bit of fun, so if shes coming with me i'll use my daily driver.

Is it not possible to fit a harness in the back to securely fit a child seat?

Thanks very much for the replies so far! Couple of good options there.

I think most of you are right in saying its probably not something to worry too much about. Will probably still put baby in the daily driver if its going to be a long drive though.

The phone I'm using at the mo won't let me see those links, but ill check them out when I get hone. Thanks!

There is another way as I found this in the Bentleys manual.

But don't know how the system works or if you get anything with a child seat to assist.

Or try the link below, it's in French but you can suss it out.
It looks like it uses puegeot belts.
