Winter Preperations.

Just wondering what everyone is doing to prepare your golf for the winter. Im planning on using my cabby all year round and this is my first winter with one so this will help me out a lot. :)

Hi there, Last year I sprayed the underside of my Cabby with a product by Bilt Hamber called Dynax S50. You can spray it on with a standard water spraying bottle and then it hardens to form the protective coating. If it gets damaged it sort of heals itself and it also inhibits rust formation.

I used my car all through the snow and ice we had ,and for saying how much salt we had on the roads, it's really protected the car.

I think we can get a discount from Bilt Hamber if you are a member.

My Mk1 is not on the road at the moment (my other car is reliable, unlike last winter!!!) but last year I did nothing special except the normal checks, ie check the oil regularly, don't let the battery go flat, tyres, washer fluid, etc etc. I did increase the concentration of the washer fluid in the harsh period, but it froze even when neat additive was in! The car never failed to start but I did carry one of them little booster pack things. This was more partly for work reasons, one of the tractors had a faulty battery and constantly needed a jump start. Sometimes the boost pack wasn't enough (it is a 4.7 litre diesel, after all!!!) but on those occasions I jump started it off the Golf, by jamming a brick on the accelerator to raise the engine speed to around 2000rpm.

A couple of electrical items wore out, simply through old age + regular usage, but nothing that stopped the car (wiper relay which left me with no intermittent but with the slow and fast; and a rear wiper motor). Also, I snapped a door handle off one particularly cold morning because the door was frozen closed solid! So I replaced that too.

Only winter prep I do is cancel the insurance, dis-connect the battery, put a cover over the car and close the garage door :(

It doesnt come out in the winter.

Just bought a T25 though, so I'm interested in the winter prep for that.

i will just carry on starting it as normal mines already off road for winter(since i got it stuck at the front off the drive lol), still insured thou i will redo the coolent or drain it totaly and remove battery i'l not be covering it with a car cover but it will be stored up the side off the house not much else other then perhaps run it out off fuel and get some fresh stuff as its already been sitting awhile but that does seem to much effort i'm sure petrol can last a few months without going funny

Stick a decent scraper in ready for getting the frost off the inside of the windows..

Snow tyres will have to go on. But not for a bit yet - we're off to Corsica hopefully in the Golf before the weather turns snowy here. Hooray!

i will swap my summer wheels over to the winter set and put the front arch liners in (took them out so i could lower it). snow gets clogged up on the inside of the wing and rusts through. i also got the underside sprayed with stuff to keep it nice and rust free. battery boost pack thingy is usefull too. i will wash it alot too. get all that orible grime and dirt off of the sweet new paint work :)
