Why has no one bought this???

Mk1 Gti 1800 on www.futureclassiccars.co.uk

It is white with a full service history to 128000, and looks to be well tidy.

It has been posted here before, which is where i saw it, but couldn't find the thread again.

1. Bad time of year + possible recession looming
2. White - not a popular colour (sorry white car owners!)
3. Price too high for mileage
4. future classics isn't really visited by that many people compared to auto Trader, eBay, possibly this site's FS area

If it were ?2000, it would probably be sold very quick, leaving the seller wondering if they should have asked more money!

Who knows?? It might be one day  8O
The Mk1 was a classic from day one, just not everybody realised :y:
1. True
2. Mine's white  :tlc: (at least it's not silver  :y: )
3. Go find one as nice with good history, 12 month ticket, 6 months tax & a 3 month warranty at that money  :dontknow:
4. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I look in, usually got ok Mk2s

Perhaps without the (naff) expensive wheels the price would be ?500 less and it would sell. :dontknow:

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of white, but it looks well tidy.
I also didn't think it was too much, but I agree with the wheels comment - they are also not legal sticking out so far.
Mileage is 'low' for a 25 year old car! Very low in fact, especially with a full service history and garanteed.
I was hoping someone had been to look at it and could add some comments.
I'm in Cardiff at the weekend, and may see if i can pop in and see it on the way home, but i'm sure if I look at it in the flesh I will be well smitten!

As for 'recession'!! Talk like that will sink us into one!!!!

THREE GRAND?!  For a normal Y-reg Golf GTI with a set of alloys on it?!

There was one round here for sale for ages, owned by the owner of a local AG dismantler, Lhasa green, 1.8 GTI, ATS Cup alloy wheels, otherwise completely standard.  Only done about 70k miles and full history, 3 owner or something?  Was up for ?2000 but he'd said he'd take ?1800 or ?1600 on standard wheels and it was in the showroom of an independent VAG dealer and it didn't sell for like 3 years so the chances of that one going anywhere quickly - very very slim!

I thnk its because people see 3k and panic, I paid just over a grand for mine and will probably spend another 3k to get it to where i want it..
If i had 3k sitting around then in some ways it would make sense to get a car like this where the hard works all been done and then just drive and enjoy it, but then its someone elses car and you'd still end pouring more money into it…..

so for me it was get a cheaper one,m spend money it when i can, even tho I'll spend more in the long, but then its done my way and teh cost gets spread over a greater time..

 Nowt wrong with white one's

It does look nice, agree about the wheels, would look better if it was lowered on them but thats extra cost to a potential buyer, so a bit off-putting.

If I had saved ?3K before buying one I'd have been to see it. But then again it's more fun fixing it up as you go, and that way you get to know your car and make it your own.

your right, it is easier to buy a car like that one, but tinkering and fixing one up and making it alive again yourself gives you a sense of pride and achievement

Another issue is the ?3000 car might need similar things replacing on it in the near future, as the ?2000 car. Some things you just can't tell when they'll fail by looking at them. So if you spend less, at least you have the extra money to cope with unexpected stuff.

Some good comments here, and i do agree - i just get impatient when I decide I want something.
I recently went to see a red campaign witha TSR engine and 170k on it for ?2500 - its enough to say i was VERY dissapointed that he beieved it was worth anything close to that!

So now i'm inclined to wait until the right one comes along at the ?1500 mark.
Worth doing some work and 'learning' about the car, but I do want to be able to enjoy it a bit first.

Ideally im after a Red 82/83 non-sunroof 1800 - if it had a 16v already in it that would be a bonus.
Maybe I'll put a Wanted ad up………………….

In 95% of cases, a ?3500 Mk1 GTI is a ?1500 Mk1 GTI with lots of polish on it.  Alot of people just make up a price and know that if they advertise it for long enough, someone will eventually come along who'll buy it.

Gotta agree with steve on that score!  :)

I dont think that car is worth any more than 1500-1750 from looking at the pictures, but with that said…
you never know what a car is worth tho untill you can see it in real life, and can have a look around it!

got to agree wi you there, i have never paid nor sold a mk1 gti for more than ?1500, you never really get to know what you have bought untill you get in aboot it on your drive, i am a great believer in buying them needing a wee bit o work and doing the work myself. then you get a decent motor the way you want it 8)

huw169,
I posted the original thread  :y:
Never thought it would cause this sort o' debate
I just thought it was an honest car off a seemingly ok dealer at a 'negotiable' price.
Always said the wheels were poo

You can buy a rough GTI out of the free papers for a few hundred quid and in most cases, run it till the MOT runs out with no major expediture.  Lets face it, if the worse happens and the engine ceases, you can get a second hand GTI engine and have change from ?100.  Brakes and suspension are similarly inexpensive to overhaul and most of the GTI's I've seen have only had wear on the drivers seat bolster and missing front spoilers, again - not the end of the world.  Even Golfs with rusty sills/doors/tail gates can be simply and inexpensively repaired in afew hours - especially now ebay turns up Mk1's breaking every day of the week.

Yes, you could spend ?3k building your ultime Mk1 but lets face it, if you've got ?3k in a car and you crash it, come back out of the shop and fid t's been scratched, wake up one orning to find the wheels have been stolen or worst of all, it gets stolen then you are understandably crushed.  I'm not saying that you wouldn't be gutted if you blew the engine in your ?1500 GTI on the way home from work but you could go through a whole lot of parts, paint and panels for the ?1500 difference in price.

The biggest attraction for me to hot hatches is that they are cheap and perform well.  If I had throusands in a Mk1 Golf, I'd be afraid to use it - then it'd be no fun owning it so what would be the point.

Case in point would be a friend of mine who had a Nova 1400 SR.  He did everything to it, carbon fibre seats, Group N strengthening package, sand blastes, seam welded, full repaint, 16v 139bhp engine on throttle boddied with MBE engine management, full roll cage, etc, etc, etc…

He ended up with the best part of ?10k in that car and once it was finished, he drove it just 68 miles before deciding it was too valuable to come out of the garage.  It's sat gathering dust ever since.  So what was the point?  He could have saved his money and had a car he could acutally enjoy using every single day.

 for 10k i would be sat behind the wheel of an early 90`s carrera 4 8)  not a Champagne Vauaxhal Nova in the sky

Im of the same opinion, i like "doing a car up" you know, all those little things that are cheap or free to do! like trim bits carelessly knocked off or broken by clumsy previous owners, fitting new badges or lamps, cleaning the glass!!! valet the seats of 20 odd years of grime!! giving the engine bay and pipe work a wipe over, clean the scuttle out of leaves!!! and just generally improving a cars overall appearance, cheap motoring can be had in a mk1, just because they are old dont mean they have to be expensive, all this Ebay "rare" has a lot to do with it im afraid, you can hear it now………

"If i put that on Ebay i will get loads"  and the best one is

"Totaly standard car… apart from steering wheel, exhaust, gearbox, suspension, wheels,  sunroof, and lights!"
