who owns a 1978 gti?

acording to my new book only 22 were register in this year

the list  totaling 20,747 in the uk!!

1984  3,885  (some may be mk2?)

I believe they were all LHD too.

I know a few of them, they were all personal imports except VW UK's own press car MKT 512R. They were mostly imported for racing, including Richard Lloyd's secondhand silver GTi.

No, the book says on page 21 "UK registrations" not UK or RHD models. :wink:

I have 5 UK registered cars that are LHD. Even more oddly I have a RHD originally registered in Germany.

you are right on that one!

doesn't say lhd or rhd just presumed thats what it meant.

i suppose registered means registered en of. my new gti was declared manafactured 1983 but registered in 1984 but on a y plate?

There is one somewhere around Blackburn. It is LHD, as they all were that year unless converted over here. I missed this one 2 years ago when came up for sale. Maybe somebody from around there knows what happened to it. It was a Silver one as well.

I own XYP136T a silver LHD 4 speed GTi which was registered on 1st August 1978. I bought it from the original owner who bought it through VW Export as he was in the forces in Germany at the time. However in 1985 he gave the car to his mother-in-law who took the car to Fuengirola in Spain where it stayed until 2002 when the original owner brought it back to Salisbury in Wiltshire. I bought it from him in 2005 but have only just got round to putting it on the road……

It is original apart from 13" mahles and needs paint (sunroof model plus spanish sun fade) However apart from the roof and screen surround, structurally the car is sound helped by ziebart rust treatment from new and the 17 years away from the British climate….
