Which rivet gun?

Hi All,

I'm taking the bumpers off the Sportline this weekend and noticed that they are riveted to the plastic arch surrounds. Can I just drill these out?

When I replace them do I need to use a specific size/type of rivet, or will a £6.99 job and a bag of assorted rivets from B&Q work OK?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Meenrod

I've just done this on my Sportline last week! The heads drill off the old rivets, but go steady as the rivets will spin, heat up and start to melt the plastic beneath. Your best to go at each one in short stages giving it time to cool before drilling again.

I bought new black headed rivets from VW (part number N 90634901) but I think GSF and GPC Luton (Chubnut999 on ebay) stock them too. And finally I bought a standard rivet gun from my local tool shop for £5 which did the job perfectly for the rebuild.

No worries mate 8) I had my bumper irons powder coated satin black whilst they were off, it cost £50 but they came out as good as new. It might be worth considering whilst your there, especially on the rear one as it catches all the crud over the years.

That's the idea- tidying up some stone chips at the front end too.

Good stuff, it's very satisfying tidying up all the hidden bits. It's just a shame you can't see them when they go back on looking factory fresh.

drill

Use a brand new drill bit mate, this will buzz the rivet heads off before they get chance to heat up and spin in the hole,u can get new bits for about £2,its worth it because it gets the job done real quick and saves any nightmares!
