where to have engine re-bored etc?
I bought the car on the understanding it had a recent rebuild but looks like the bottom end has never been touched in 29 years
So needs a lot of work doing for which I have had a quote (I'll list this below)
Cylinder Head:-
Reface £30
Pressure Testing £40
Valve Guides (supply & fit) £10 per guide
Valve seat cutting (3 angle) £3 per seat
Valve facing (2 angle + cleaning) £5 per valve.
Cylinder Head Porting (Gas Flowing) Starts from £250
Cylinder Block:-
Rebore 4 Cylinders £120.00
Reface block Face £40
Crankshaft:-
Check & Polish £30 (Std sizes)
Full Regrind £135 (Ground Undersize)
Crack Test £40
Full Engine Balance £140
Con Rods:-
Remove/Fit & Hone New Small Ends £15 each
Flywheel:-
Reface £45
Do these prices seem reasonable? I'm looking at 1k plus parts! Is there anyone who has had an engine rebuild who can recommend a company to me?
Anywhere that supplies off the shellf rebuilt engines at all?
thanks for any input
Martin

Or…. you should be able to get a decent secondhand engine on here for £100-150 from the classifieds and maybe give it a top end rebuild yourself - if you've got the skills to remove the engine and open up the block you should be able to manage that with one of the guides, some time and a bit of patience
Hope this helps

I'm awaiting the price of the parts which should follow today…
I'm a bit torn really- an engine conversion would be cheaper but that's the easy way - I'd really like a super stock engine with all the toys ( nice fast road cam, gas flowed etc) that way I keep the soul of my car in place - yes I know that sounds a bit cheesey!
Hmm anybody know of a tricked 1.8 8v gti engine for sale? done the useal fleabay search & nothing

If you're feeling flush you could send your whole engine off to TSR and get what you're after for £1840…. Soul intact and 16v performance!

whimper whimper…. not feeling that flush ;-(
Does look ace though!
I may have to put sorting the engine on hold until I get the bill for my bare shell re-spray. My budget fell apart many months ago!

Could try them for a second quote that's close to home. Goodluck! I like the sentiment of keeping the golf's soul. That makes me feel guilty I threw my mk1's 1.5 JB into a skip and bought a 16v. *cries*
