Where do I start
Firstly I haven't got my license yet, Im taking my test in the next few months. But before I take my test I want my vehicle situtaion sorted so I don't waste too much time once I have the license (fingers crossed)
Secondly If this is the wrong place to ask these questions I apolagise in advance. Please direct me to the correct location for the answers!
Basicly Im after a VW golf gti mk1 1.6 (colour either red/white/black).
Im totally new to this so Im not sure what year, or not sure what to look out for and what could be a common problem.
I know for sure that I want it standard 100% and prefer it to be in the best condition possible or in other words I don't want to have to spend time restoring (mainly because of time).
I know that finding a restored or near perfect model will be hard and not cheap but money is not an issue here. But also Im not stupid and will not spend silly amounts, So i need to know how much am I looking at too spend and what is a resonable price?
I also need to know where to look and where to go (like a said total beginner) Im from in South London, but currently live in Coventry due to uni, altho I have only 1 more year left.
And lastly im a first timer, aged 22, where is the best place for fully comp insurance and what is the best thing to do to get the best quote!
Thanks to anyone that helps me out, like I said I am a newbie with no knowledge of where to go or start.
Thanks

There are some nice cars from time to time for sale, and when you get one you will get all the advice you need.
As for insurance, look into a limited classic policy.
As a mk1 is now a classic.

I'd budget between ?2k and ?3k for a nice example of a Series 2 GTI (1981-83). Have a look at the buying guide for lots more useful info

If I were you I'd look at getting a driver instead, unless you're over 25. Insurance companies won't do a classic policy for under-25s, and will charge the earth for a new driver with a GTI on a normal policy…

Not trying to douse anyone's fire, but I took out a classic policy for my mk2 a couple of months ago and I only turned 20 a week and a half ago.
My brother also has 3 classic policies and he is only 23.
On my policy, the car has to be over 15 years old if I wish to change it.
I believe (don't take this as gospel) that 'classic' insurance varies from place to place, both in cars eligible and drivers they will cover.
Oh and just so you know, my first car last year had an ?1800 premium on third party fire and theft with 5000 miles per year (it was a 97 Mondeo saloon, don't ask).
I personally would recommend giving HIC (Herts Insurance Company) a ring for insurance quotes, they've done well enough for me and my brother. That is they halved my premium when I bought my golf.
