Where can I race a MK1?

I have a MK1 shell which I am thinking of turning into a track car.

What events / racing series could I race other MK1's or similar in?

It depends if you're into circuit racing or would be happy enough with drag racing.

For drag racing, there is a series for RWYB (Run What You Brung) which is based at Santa Pod and there's like about 16 rounds of RWYB weekends, its an informal thing and there's a ?100 prize at the end of it all.

There's a similar thing at York Raceway - 2NZ or something like that. Basically, its RWYB but with someone keeping track of the points and someone coming 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc at the end of the year.

You could move up into proper VWDRC - VW Drag Racing Club - who run at VW Shows, and in between also attend other (non-VW) shows. This is bracket racing, ie you dial in your time and the closest who runs to it, wins. So it doesn't penalise a slower car, and it rewards consistency.

If you're into circuit racing, I think for Mk1s the only realistic option is a VW Racing series (can't remember its proper title) but its quite strict on the amount of standard equipment your car will have; and it runs all models together (I think???).

If you are more serious about racing than Mk1s, there is a recently started Mk2 Golf race series, its mid way through the season now so it would be an ideal time to look into it, perhaps get yourself down to some events and see if you want to do it in 2008.

And of course, there's always plain old track days and RWYB at recognised VW events.

There's other stuff too, eg rallying, etc etc.

think you can race mixed classes or just in the vw cup , the vw cup i think is the most expensive because its the most exclusive and they run all types of vw's from mrk2's to vans to beetles….

but race meetings like the 750 motor club and the BRSCC put on all types on mixed tin top racing that might be more appealing and somtimes the "rookes" are involved in the best racing i have seen in ageees!

if you look in autosport mag , they have just started up a mrk 2 only race , think the first one was at croft…

but you have a mrk 1 so thats kinda useless info!

Afraid you can't run a mk1 in the VW cup any more.  Cars must be less than 10 years old for this series, unless they have competed in it over the last 2 years.

As mentioned there are a few other possibilities besides the classic touring cars series: e.g. BRSCC LMA Euro Saloon champonship (class E), and the 750MA Hot hatch or potentially Stock hatch series.

Next race for the MK2 series is at Silverstone on the 18 August, in case anyone is interested in seeing it. (Lots of MK1 racing knowledge amongst some of those guys to tap into!)
