When you first knew you loved Mk1 Golfs

What was the defining point that you knew you had developed a love for the Mk1 Golf?

When i was about 12 a guy in my village had one and it was the absolute tits, it was white, had the zender spoiler and the talking alarm (all the rage back then)!!!!

That was 15 years ago and i only just got one last year.

Good things come to those who wait i reckon!!!

That's a tough one to answer really.

I've always wanted one but could never afford the one one I wanted, if you get me!

Instead I bought an XR2 and the an R5 GTX, never getting round to the Mk1.

It wasn't really love until I actually owned my first one. Then and only then could I say I fell in love.

There's something about it that you just can't put your finger on, unfortunately the same goes for the Mrs these days!

Ive always been into VW's since my mate bought a very ropey Beetle when i was 16. I messed about with various old fords and air cooled VW's until another mate came round one day in a beige 5 door mk1. I was instantly hooked. So much so that i went out that weekend and bought a complete shed of a campaign. Ive often strayed but always come to my first true love.

When i was about 13, it was actually a 3 door gti mk2 that had no tax and was on the road in a sorry state. A friend and i wanted to buy it off the guy and restore it.

It wasnt until I saw a convertible and at a age when I could half realisticly get one.

Remember the day when saw the ad and went to see the car. The feeling when the guy opened the garage doors was a 'wow, this is actually real, im going to own this car' feeling

My Sister had a beige auto, supposedly pre owned by the queens doctor. Her then bloke had an 8v mk2 gti. That's what started me really. I did like the Mk2 more at first. But since then the Mk1's have shown alot more character and uniqueness. My blue driver- soon (next month, fingers crossed) to be G40 was my very first car and has been my daily driver for 11 years.

i've wanted one since i started driving in 98 and bought my first one which was a black gti cab on a B plate in 2000 then sold that 2 year later due to silly high insurance, then i bought my current gti, a black 83 and restored it back to its former glory, its one of my dream cars and i dont think i'll ever sell her………

I can remeber the exact moment!
I was 13 walking home from school and i saw a mk1 'hoon' it round  a round about sounded amazing!! and it was racing and beating an escort cosworth.
That was the moment when I though for get all those air cooled slowies and I wanted a mk1 golf I saved from that day till I was 17 and bought a Red mk1 golf was a beast unfortunatly it used more oil than it did fuel. lol So i sold it and bought a clipper, Sold that and bought a Rivage Reck! It aint a reck any more I would put a picture but I have no idea how you guys put them in a convo!!??(can anyone tell me?)

Any way I have never had any other car! I have however drove other cars as my dad own a crap yard!! And in all the years my dad has owned it I have never seen a mk1 golf in there…..NEVER!!! Now that says alot about mk1 golf!!

first mk1 i ever saw that took my breath away was when i was about 15, saw it when walking back from school, it was low, loud, with a clipper kit, a set of wide polished 5 spokes and painted in a sort of purpley blue that changed when the sun hit it.

when i was 16, in my first job, was there for a few months when a new lad started at the same company, the owner of the purpley blue mk1 and was selling it, obviously at 16 i had no way of buying it but about 18 months later he bought it back from the girl he sold it to, kept it for a year and put it up for sale again,  then it was mine

so its safe to say i bought the mk1 that made me love mk1's, back then i wouldnt have had any other mk1 golf so im glad he put it up for sale the second time when i was in a position to buy it as i was looking at mk1 escorts at the time

OMG I seriously love my golf, but I could never have traded in a fastback for one!! I'm glad you feel you did the right thing though! For me the aircooled would be the priority (says he with the beetle that's been off the road for 5 years!!) and I dream of one day adding a fastback to my fleet 'cos aside from the beetle they are my favourite aircooled VW.

My housemate at uni bought one in our 3rd year, it was the first Mk1 i'd sat in and immediately loved it. 2 years later I bought it off him and loved it even more. Unfortunately I lost my job and need to sell it to pay the rent…

Here it is looking its best. Which wasn't exactly that good! Still wouldn't mind it back though.

Been into vee dubs since i can remember, used to read street machine as a kid, then volksworld.. I've had my fair share of cars over the years, but always returned to VW, got the chance to finally realise my dream last year and got the MK1 GTI, just wish i could have kept it.. I'm still a huge Air cooled fan tho as the whole of my late teens/early twenties were with a 69 panel van and a 72 beetle..
I'd love another GTI MK1 now, but funds are far too tight to get one and keep it on the road.. so I'd probably get a 1.3 or 1.5 as a cheap run a round - tinkering toy if i find one at right money..
