When is a Mk1 not a Mk1?

I have read in various posts more than i few times the phrase "not a real Mk1" in reference to Clipper's, Rivage's and Sportline's etc (you know the ones, the cars vw produced long after they ditched the tintop Mk1 in favour of the Mk2). Is it just the models i have mentioned that are not "real"? Is a 82 Gl cabby for instance "real"? Would an 85 GTI cabby be a "real" one because it has a GTI badge or is it just cabby's in general that aren't real?
Now, I must add that i am a fan of all things Mk1, cabby's, tintop's and caddy's and have been since my dad got his first GTI back in 1982. I am just wondering that is all.  :dontknow:

Guess everyone has their own opinion on this, for me the tin top is the real deal but only when fitted with at least the gti engine/suspension.

Yeah it's each to their own dude.

My personal opinion is that anything post 83 is not a mk1.

So only a pre 83 GTI is a real Mk1? Damn, how about a pre 83 with a 20vt fitted? This can't be classed as a Mk1 then?  :D

Ahh man, now i am more confused  :? Only pre 83 tintop's built at wolfsburg are real mk1's, except non wolfsburg pre 83 cabby's which are allowed, just. You tintop guys must be mortified that we have a cabby (not a real mk1) on the flyer for this years AGM  :D lol

But seriously, if its definitely a golf and its not a mk2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 it must be a mk 1.

If you look historically at this club, it was formed from "The Campaign Register". They sought to differentiate the Campaign GTIs from other GTIs, but muddled it up slightly when they did the sums and realised that Pirelli edition GTIs are essentially the same, except they're not Campaigns. Following things so far? Didn't think so!

Still to this day you have people claiming that Campaigns are worth more than noncampaign GTIs. Does that include the pirelli edition?

Then they put that to one side and opened it up to all Mk1s, GTIs and non-GTI alike, except of course if it is a Jetta (because a Jetta isn't a Golf) except the Rabbit is okay because that looks like a Golf, except it doesn't because its american not European, but then if you ignore the american changes it looks like a Golf. But Caddys aren't allowed, because they're not a Golf either, even though it has more body parts in common with a Campaign GTI than any cabriolet ever will.

Let's not mention Sciroccos…..

^^^ :?

This all opinion of course, I think that officially the mk1 died when the last tintop rolled off the production line all those moons ago..

However, I think that you have so many clauses to include, like series 1, 2, swallowtails etc.. FHA en it's hard to gauge a decent and factual opinion about this sort of thing.

Being somewhat of a purist IMO a mk1 stops being a mk1 when anything irreversible is done to it (hefty engines, drive conversion etc).

obviously all mk1 golfs are 'real' mk1s but i think its people like me who dislike cabbys that dont class them as a 'proper' mk1 golf. its not just because i hate the look of a cabby that i dont class it as a mk1, it just hasnt got that iconic shape that i know a mk1 golf has, or should have. GTI or no GTI, a tintop is a 'real' or 'proper' mk1  8)

I know why this thread has appeared, its because you read my reply to the what do you do come SORN time thread.

I have a couple of ways I think about this.  I don't in general like cabbys that have the clipper kit on them.  It ruins the lines of the car and gives it that 90's look.  The MK1 golf is an iconic shape no doubt about it and a clipper kitted cabby looks pretty much nothing like a tin top mk1.  I don't know what year they made the cabriolet up to, well into the 90's when production of the real original deal stopped in '84.  So yea I don't class anything past when the tin top stopped production as a TRUE mk1, obviously it is a REAL mk1 but not a TRUE mk1.  Lets face it they got fitted with mk2 engines, got PAS and all that other crap that just isn't mk1 at all.

So yea, if you have an early cabby on small bumpers with a mk1 engine Ill call it a mk1, if you have a late cabby with mk2 blended in and a clipper kit im afraid I just can't see it as a mk1…
