I'm sure you'll get a lot of varied answers to this one, but i founs 195/50/15" worked well on my clipepr with standard ride height.. Never scraped with people in, once lowered tho with a car full on a bumpy road they scraped a bit..

I'm sure there's people on here with 17's fitted

There's a whole load of things to look out for, including what supension setup you have.

Is it lowered? How much?

Lower cars, generally will tend to rub more over bumps, holes etc.

You can roll the inner edges of the arches upwards to accomodate larger/wider wheels and also pull them outwards to make even more space (best tackled by a bodyshop, though).

As far as personal taste goes I wouldn't go much above a 15 inch wheel as I don't think mk1's look that good with huge multispokes and rubber band tyres.

Loads of people run different wheel/suspension combinations so there'll be loads of help.

Yradave says relax.

it is a standard suspension set up due to living in village roads are not car friendly in areas, the largest wheel i have looked at and would try and fit would be 16inch i know that for a fact as any bigger and doesnt look as good (in my opinion)

are there any issues regarding 16inch, ofset or anything to look out for ect

never changed a set of wheels other than standard 15" for 15" so really unsure on what to look out for

any wheels people would suggest either, probably a ?500 - ?600 top budget

Might be worth checking out this thread from a couple of weeks ago, it
was called, what wheels are best…

I do agree with Dave tho, and think 15's look best

All I'd suggest if going up a size is to get the tracking re-set
