Whats the ultimate Mk1?

Whats the ulimate mk1?

Being fairly new to the mk1 having spent nearly 20yrs with air cool (and still going!) and other VW contraptions, I have been wondering what the ultimate mk 1 may be?

Stock? Modded?

Year? Early or late?

Engine?

UK or Import?

Colour?

Cabrio or Tin Top?

Whats your opinion?   8)

It's probably different for everyone, but personally I prefer a GTI over non-GTI and a standard car over a modified car (the retro Kamei build is definitely an exception to this!).  So my ultimate mk1 would be either a race build like the Kamei or a very early GTI.  Colour wise, anything but red because it ages to badly.  Being in the UK I prefer UK RHD of course.

Saying that there are loads of very nice custom mk1s out there, it's an impossible question really.  Everyone's likes are slightly different.  I don't think there is a mk1 that stands out as very much more desirable than others (like the 21 window samba might in the type 2 world).

Ah the 16s, how could I forget that!  A great rare car indeed, a contender for the ultimate mk1.  Does the Porsche mk1 even qualify?  Very cool but really a VW or a 928 in disguise.

Mars Red Series 1 GTI 4 speed, the original and still the best.

And in restoring one! Can't wait to finish it and get driving it!

yes a 4 speed 1.6 in the metallic light green (whatever colour that is called). but I would add 15" ATS wheels with Pirelli P7 tyres 195/50/15

Ultimate for me and i did once have plans to do it. tintop, mars red, standard looking body apart from a set of wheels but lots going on underneath, ie turbo, four wheel drive etc.

4wd has no place in a Mk1!

 mk1 perfection!
