What to look for?

Alight guys,

I had a Mk1 Golf 3 years ago and i was lucky enough to get one that had mint bodywork that passed its MOT with no issues (I only owned it 2 weeks and sold it for silly profit).

Anyway, Im going to look at a Mk1 tomorow which has been standing the last 10 years roughly, its been dry stored which is obviously a bonus.

BUT, I don't know the common problems/areas i should be particulary paying attention to.

I know about checking what the plastic arches could be hiding, sills, filler neck. And different fluids, tyres etc.

So any more info from you lot will be great!

Thanks

If you've read the buyers guide on the right hand side of the homepage you will know most of the areas to look for.  However, with cars that are stood still for 10 years the other things you need to check will be rubber.  Door and boot seals become brittle, tyres will need to be replaced and things like the rubber fuel pipe from the filler neck to the tank will need to be checked.  Brakes will probably be binding and best replaced and check that a mouse hasn''t been in there.  They tend to chew the most annoying things like wiring.

Budget for all of the above and if it's cheap then go for it!!

Good luck.

That guide is great, i will make use of that in just under an hour, plenty of inspection time ahead.

Well, i checked it over and all the rust areas are clean except the spare wheel area, buts its very minor.

I have given them my offer (Not my highest   ) and they are going to get back to me once they (Brother and sister) have talked it over.

Its only had one owner (Their late father) so its quite a find.

I will keep you updated, and i hope to post pics of my new Mk1 soon - fingers crossed!
