What started your Mk1 love affair?
Hello!
I've just been looking through the family album and realised there's little wonder I ended up obsessed with the Mk1 Golf and subsiquently the entire Marque.
As I scanned through, the first car I remember, my Dad's old Golf. No C or CL just Golf. so pretty basic.
N reg, three door, the small tail lights didnt even have reverse lamps! god I wish I owned that now!!
then a black five door CL totally mint condition, chrome eveything. again if only!
A mk2 followed, again just a Golf but that was the end..the Mk1 always stood out as the winner to him.
So how about you?
What started it?
Where and how did you catch the bug??

I was lucky enough to have my first Gti when I was 19, god I loved it.
It was a little scruffy but it never mattered.
I'm 32 now and I've got a Golf C, got that one backwards I think?

Always wanted a golf as my first car, quite liked the mk4's at first then my dad suggested a mk1. Having found this site i haven't wanted another car apart from a mk1.

It started when I was 19 when my mum bought me a W reg Lido green 1.1L for my first car from a friend of the family. Now I'm on my 4th Mk1 with 7 Golf's in total 6 of them GTI. So makes around 14 years of being VW fan.

mine started when i was 16 (back in 1996), at the time i wanted a mk1 escort (do still have a soft spot for them too) and on my way home from school one day i saw a tarted up tintop mk1 golf.
changed from very light blue to deep purple when the sunlight hit it (not helios), clipper kit, very low and loud on polished 5 spoke wheels.
that very mk1 made me want one, started a job when i left school and a new lad started after a couple of years, the same lad who owned the blue mk1 which i saw as an impressionable 16 yr old, the car was for sale but as much as i tried to talk him into keeping it (untill i could afford to buy it) it was sold on, he then bought it back after about 7 months, and i bought it from him when i was 19
so my first mk1 gti was the one that made me want a mk1 in the first place.
i had only been driving a few months when i bought the mk1 (in an mg metrot of all things) so insuring the gti was a bit of a struggle but well worth it
set me up properly though as ive now had 13 tintop mk1's with various engines in them amongst other vw's
i dont have a tintop at the mo, but hopefully that wont be for too long.
thanks for reading. karl

My first was a mk1 fiesta a present for passin my test, had its about 12 months then had a mk1 escort I built (my first ever a build a totally ground up rebuild from a rolling shell) I'l dig out some pic's. So I too have a major soft spot for those, but its been dubs ever since 2x mk1 golfs, 2x mk2's (one a syncro) and a corrado. all been great but the mk1 has just got THE magic!
Turning into a good little thread this!

I love vw since my mom bought her 89 16v GTI new and I just loved the car! Then she added a 89 fox for a second car. So about 5 years ago I saw a 84 GTI for $500 right outside of my mother-in-law's house. Once thing lead to another and I bought the heap. I wouldn't part from the car for the world. I smile every time I drive this 8v!

Fantastic thread, you can feel the love.
Seeing this as a child made me fall in love with VW Golfs….and led me to purchase one.

Having a massive love for my beloved precious Mk2, introduced me to my love of Mk1's.
Ok I know its gone backwards, but I'm there now.
Special little cars that make me beam from ear to ear.

Brilliant, I remember that advert!!
Mine started when my brother came home one day with a battered green Y reg mk1 gti which looked in a sorry state. I asked him why he bought what looked like a rusty piece of junk (didn't no much about mk1's) and he just smiled and took me out for a drive…the engine was good and I was hooked. Bought one for myself 3 weeks later, now on my third one!!
