What should my fuel cap look like?

The fuel cap on my car is a sort of star thing and then in between the points of the star there is another bit of plastic so you can't see the screws underneath. The ones I can see for sale on ebay are the same sort of star thing but there is nothing in between the points. What did the original cap look like? If you use one of these aftermarket caps can you see the screws underneath? I hope I'm making sense!

Here's a pic of my original cap mate, you can't see much in between the 'points', but it's flush all the way around, this is a 82 GTI:

Hope that helps…

well that's what mine looks like. But when you take yours off, do those black bits in between the points come off too?? Or is that a separate piece of trim underneath? Cos on mine its all one piece part of the cap, but the caps for sale on ebay don't have that, they just have the points of the star with nothing in between.

There's a black sticker that goes over the screws that hold the filler pipe on.

OK, I think I'm getting what you're saying. The bit underneath [or in between] the points is trim. When you take it off, it's just the point of the stars with nothing in between.

Sounds like the bay is right, could be you're missing trim then?  :dontknow:

ah ok. I understand this now. Mine does not have that trim. I think I may pay a visit to Adam in the parts room at my local VW dealership on Monday, 'cos it looks from the ETKA like it might still be possible to buy a kit containing the lockable cap, two keys, and this piece of trim that I have missing.

My Mk1 Driver had the same sort of fuel cap where the indents of the star had plastic behind that was part of the cap.

If your car an '83 driver by any chance?

No, it's a GX, but I'm certain the petrol cap isn't original because the key on my spare set of keys doesn't fit it.

A GX should have the cap with the springy arm going over the key hole, same as campaign filler caps.

I can't find the part numbers on ETKA, they don't seem too clear.

Crazyquiff does them, though.

Thanks for the info everyone. I've now sorted myself out with a new cap, with the flip up bit in the middle, and the textured sticker thing that goes behind it. I have one more question now - under where these stickers go there is a ring of 3 screws (or 2 on mine, one seems to be AWOL). Should the heads on these protrude so that there are visible bumps underneath the textured sticker? Or should they be flush so there are none? And if the latter, which would be my guess, the two I've got must be the wrong size so what size screws should go here?

Its ok, the screws on on ETKA with a part number so I might be able to get hold of the right ones from VW if I'm lucky. Then again they're probably obsolete.
