What should I go for?
I adore mk1's and am determined to get one for my first car. I recently found out how much a 1.8 cabby's insurance was, and wasn't very happy as it was near 6 grand for a 17 year old. Could I get a cabby and put a 1.2 engine in it?
Any help would be much apreciated

Unlikely, to reduce the insurance, since they would see it as a 'modification'. Far better would be to go for a 1.6 carb cabby, they did a 1.5 early on in its life too (but unlikely to find one of these). The 1.5 is 70bhp, the 1.6 is 75bhp and the 1.8 (carb) is 90bhp. Unsure if insurance companies still broadly base things on "insurance groups", I think they take into account the sportiness of the car and the age of the driver too.

as paul has said…the engine is not the major concern of the insurance company.
It's the fact you're a 17 year old in an old cabby.
Best advice is shop around for insurance and try different policies, like get your mum as the first driver and you as the second etc.
Unfortunately, getting insured at 17 is gonna be a killer no matter, and with your fantastic taste in cars, it's going to be extortion regardless. You may have to go for a tintop for a while, and let your insurance policy mature until it's not millions to get a cabby- still a mk1 golf!!
Good Luck mate!

Oh yeah, as a daily driver, a cabby will be slightly more insurance than the equivalent hatchback - due to the increased risk of theft - from its soft top.

for a tin top - a 1.1 c, or a 1.3 driver if you want.

Well there you go he is halfway there then, i am certain it is cheaper as they dont look at an auto being as sporty as the manual models, i am happy with mine though as it does all i need it to do.
