what engine to buy for around ?1000

got around a ?1000 to spend on my mk1 ,to buy an engine ,i have done a number of fords and hondas over the years and kitcars but vws are new to me i know nothing about them
so what engine would you buy and why and how much will it cost to do ??

what about a 3.2 R32 engine? god knows what it would cost but DAMN it would be fast!

For ?1000 you'd never be able to buy an R32 engine.

Best bet would be a 16V, and spend the rest on sorting out things like decent engine mounts, top end rebuild, oil cooler, etc.

well, a clutch is gunna cost you about ?50-?70 then the time it takes you to fit it. so depending what kind of condition the rest of the car's in id say its worth it.

sounds good everything you need and its 139bhp i beleive depends on the engine code

the mk3 2.0 16v gti engine (ABF?) was quoted as 150 bhp and 133lbs. this seeems to be quite a conservative figure however. i would imagine with a four branch and decent exhaust+air filter 160-170 would not be uncommon at all. a remap would help to better that too.
