Went to Timpsons to get a key cut today........

I was up Telford town centre today and thought I'd get a spare key cut for the Mk1 cabby, went to Timpsons and this actually happened!!…

Me "Hi, I'd like a key cut"
Bloke"Certainly, just let me scan the transponder(scans key), it hasn't got one"
Me"I know, its a 1991 mk1 golf, it never had a transponder"
Bloke"Are you sure? They were fitted to cars as early as 'M' Reg"
Me"Its a 1991"
Bloke"It could have had a transponder"
Me"I'm certain it doesn't"
Bloke"I don't think we can make you a key"
Me"Yeah, its best we leave it I think!!"

And look what's happen at BMW when they did away with physical 'keys' and relied on transponders/immobilisers

lol that did make me chuckle.

I enquired at Timpsons the other day if I provided a blank would they cut it (as wanted a proper vw key done) but they refused as they expected to c*ck it up.

I then enquired at a tiny little shop in my town and they were "yeah no problem, but as your original is worn lets get one of our blanks cut and get that 100% right then cut your supplied blank from that"

Made perfect sense.

i went to timpsons for a "surf" key for my jeep, knew they wouldnt have one as its an odd ball car so bought a blank from ebay, took it in asked them to cut it and they refused as it wasnt one of their blanks, after a short argument that all i wanted was my blank cut, i gave up and said ok i will have one of your blanks cut, guess what ? they didn't have one in stock!! and still wouldnt cut mine !!!!!!!!!!!!!! bl**dy idiots

Up untill this thread i didn't realise that they are a larger company or have franchises, which then does then explain the lack of experience and service.

I got a blank off eBay & took it to timpsons & they cut it for free, they said as they didn't supply the key they couldn't charge me

I think then from your comment it depends which store you go to as they totaly refused to touch a blank they had not supplied when I enquired.

It was over a year ago so maybe they changed it to not at all instead of free?

Does anyone know where I can get a Blank key in the original style you know the one thats in Black with the VW logo inset in metal?

I got mine off eBay, I took it to a key cut place, can't remember if it was a timpsons or not, but they said something about 'it might not work in the car because it's not a blank they have supplied' haha but yea cost me £5

UPDATE!!

I sent Timpsons an email last night and had a reply within hours from their area manager.  He phoned me this morning and personally apologized, he had also arranged for me to visit another branch, who would cut my key for free.

So this morning I went and now have a spare key!!

Result. Ive also had this problem with them took a saxo key douch bag point blank refused to cut it as the origenal was too worn. I was like well cut it with a key minus the chip and ill try that if it dosent work i dont care. It wont start the car minus chip. However my t plate sprinter ran fine untill i sold it minus the chip.

I went to timpson's once for a key for my fiat dispatch van. I put it in to try it and it would not come back out, so they had to send for a locksmith to remove it to witch he said the key was cut on the wrong machine hence it was no good.  Il not go back to them now
