VW Sportline 1.8 MK1

I'm thinking of purchasing a Sportline 1.8 GTI Cabrio. Does anybody know what the main areas of concern are with these cars if any? The reason for my purchase is i plan to drive down to tuscany in it and i think this car would be ideal. Any ideas on 0-60 time and what the mpg is? What is a good price to pay for one of these?

I would be grateful for any advice you can give on this subject.

Kind Regards

I got a Flash red one 8)  MPG is always around 30mpg unless you drive like miss daisy or Ayrton senna

no real problem areas any different to other mk1 cabriolets, just make sure it is a real sportline if your paying the extra!

All sportlines should say sportline on the log book, if it dont it aint!
All had grey/black recaro, with red detail seats and trim, only came in Flash Red or Black, leather bound steering wheel, black centred BBS RA alloys (exclusive to the sportline)

even though cabriolet hater "wooders" has seen fit to add a set to his johnny foreigner campaign imposter mk1

all had orange needles on the instrument gauge. rest of the car is pretty much the same as any other late spec cabrio, apart from the "sportline"  decals on the rear 1/4`s
the electric hood is standard, but electric windows are NOT

check for accident damage and HPI it, if it drives nice, and is a nice car, buy it :D  I have had mine for about 18 months now and love it, on srtandard rims or on its widened BBS :D

Excellent

Thanks for your reply very helpful indeed. I've got my eye on one at the moment I'll make sure it has Sportline on the Log book. He wants ?3000 for it. Do you think that is a good price? its done 100,000 miles but it looks in good condition.

3k for a nice one is about right, mine had done 102k when i got it and its still going strong at……….106k   seriously though the old DX engine is fine as long as its serviced and looked after as with anything

you do have some points for hagling, 2nd gear syncro always goes on them normally, mines a little bit crunchy when cold but fine once warmed, you just have to give it a 2 second pause before engaging the gear

check the carpets for damp, make sure the hoods in good condition and works! it should take around 10-15 seconds to open and the same to close, front hood locking handles are very expensive if they are broken, and it can have either a rubber type hood or cotton mohair depends if its been changed, all little areas to haggle on

That second gear doesn't sound good.

I think i will buy it as It'll be better than my previous convertible which was a 1.6 clipper.

is that your car on Youtube?

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

ther second gear syncromesh is common to ALL mk1 golf gti`s! Regardless of year, vw gearbox is the weakest link on most early vw`s

like said its not a mojor problem and its not mega expensive to have it fixed (?300 ish) and to be honest its only apparant on mine if you change gear too fast when its really cold, its just something to consider if the one you looked at has it? some dont, either way it can be lived with as you hardly ever need 2nd if your on long runs and if you know its there its not a problem as your more carefull when selecting that gear :D

And The sportline on youtube isnt my one :D  it looks identical though! apart from the black rear lamps on it, mine are standard still, think that one has a 20v T conversion? its quick anyway
