Values of MK1 on the rise?

I looked in one of the popular Golf magazine's classified adds at the weekend, and noted that all the MK1 Golf GTI's advertised where around the ?3,000 mark. Are the values finally catching up with the rest of the classic car markets?

I personally think its the gap widening between "tidy example needs a little TLC" and " Tidy SOLID example". I have viewed dozens of the former. TLC means new arches and back panel or engine ragged to death and leaking rad and brakes or interior lived in by chimps….
Bodywork is not cheap and neither is a good paint job coupled with so many shops turning away anything more detailed than a fill and blow over. Then there is the trouble sourcing all "those" bits to finish off a car. So its about time the cream was suitably recompenced…

We are still in a mad price inrease for many 70's classics due to many 30 somethings and 40 somethings now being in a good position to buy say an RS Escort that they lusted after as a young lad but coul dnot afford. As a result over the last few years prices have gone through the roof!

There is also the motorsport heritage of Escorts and the like that have helped hike up prices and think this is the area that will hold the Golf back sligtly??

Sayng that I would say its the now 20 somethings that are going on for 30 that will be the next group with spare money to splash out on the dream car of their youth. This is where the likes of the Golf and 205 will come in strong I reckon.

The prices are just starting to rise on Mk1 Golfs and 205 GTi's when good examples are for sale. But amrk my words, this time next year what ever you buy now will be worth more.

In other words, get in now and keep hold of everything you can hoard! I wish I did it years ago with Escorts, well I did actually, but more so!!

The only way is up….

From what ive seen the modified campaigns are not fetching as much cash.. But i suppose it depends on the mods.. i looked at one that had had a single wiper conversion (dont very badly) and electic windows etc etc. it was so hashed together that it would be hard to return it to standard trim..

A standard As it left factory classic always beats a modded one in most respects… That said it depends on the level of the mods.. Simply swapping alloys ripping of badges and fitting a drainpipe exhaust will def' lose you money if trying to sell a classic. That said most are reversable..
Mods can be a can of worms as 9 times outta 10 you build a car you like the look of..but will potential buyers as you limit the market.

Cheap classics are taking off as there is a lot of Tax exempt cars the for that very nature are getting revived.. Maxi, Princess, Allegro…Very cheap so pushing up the ranking of the mass hatches

tin tops are certainly gaining value due to the demand and so many knackered ones out there. As for modded versions i agree it all depends on the reversability of the mod to a potential owner. Personnally my car was a distance from a standard Campaign on purchase, but with the knowledge that all mods can be reversed very easily without to much expense, (apart from sourcing a decent set of P's and a leather s wheel) I bought it. One day I'll put it back to standard or even collect all the bits together to sell with the car if God forbid I put myself in a position i have to sell

I agree with what you guys are saying.  If they are moddied subtly it seems to be ok.  Mines moddied quite a bit but looks totally standard, apart from being dropped 60mm.  All campaign extras are still there, but one owner fitted electric windows and remote central locking.  This was done expensively and looks in character to a point.

Only thing that worries me is the original engine had a 1900cc TSR c-pack done in the mid 90s.  Goes like stink, but im not sure how this will effect its value :?

so, in keeping with the question, what did you pay for it?

Campaign Mk 1 Black

16v Mk2 Red (decsd )

I paid 1500 for mine, but the roof and tailgate needs doing.  I've been quoted 600 for a proper job.  It should be near mint then.  Bad bolster wear on driver's seat, but i have a spare mint passenger seat as a donor.

Saying that i struggled to get 2950 for my helios campaign a few months back and that was in better nick and a lot rarer.

Cheers
